It appears that Gateway International Raceway management has once again listened to those of you
who offer constructive criticism. A longer season, added race days and several new events mark the
2006 GIR schedule. Among the changes are new sportsman bracket races, new major championship
events, a new test-n-tune program, and an extended Midnight Madness program. However, Gateway
still retains some of the most prestigious major championships in drag racing.
Here’s what’s new and what’s not:
Tuesday Street Car Shootout Series Events
The Street Car Shootout Series will again be presented in twenty-six events. Open test-and-tune action
will be complimented by the popular SCSS program in which the sixteen quickest entries (based on
elapsed time) earn “Fastest Street Car Qualifier” decals. The two quickest qualifiers in three different
divisions race heads-up for trophies. The three categories include the Street Car Shootout, (for the two
quickest entries regardless of configuration), the Sport Tuner Shootout, (for all passenger cars except
Rear-Wheel-Drive 8-cylinder or 6-cylinder vehicles), and the Super Truck Showdown, (for all utility
vehicles). The only change in the Tuesday SCSS program will be the inclusion of the High School
Eliminator bracket racing program previously contested on Friday nights. The High School eliminator
championship is open to all High School students possessing valid High School identification and
parental consent, if required. The program is sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association with a
point series determining a season champion and series finalists are eligible to compete in Indianapolis,
Indiana at the NHRA Division III Sportsman Finals in September. High School Eliminator vehicles may
not run quicker than 12.00 seconds per NHRA rules. Gates open at 5 PM with racing until 10 PM.
SCSS qualifying takes place from 6:30 PM until 9 PM.
Wednesday Test-N-Tune Events
The Gateway Test-N-Tune program begins its fortieth year with no changes to the traditional
Wednesday program. Open timed trials are available for cars with purpose-only racing tires (slicks and
drag radials) and all street or strip motorcycles. Gates open at 5 PM with timed trials until 10 PM.
Friday Open Test-N-Tune/Junior Dragster Events
Fridays: A major format change will open Friday nights to all vehicles in an open test-and-tune format.
The extremely popular GIR Junior Dragster program will conduct its series point races during the Friday
events, as well. The open timed trial format will mirror the Wednesday night program, although vehicles
with street tires will be permitted. Gates open at 4:30 PM.
Midnight Madness Series
The Midnight Madness program has been expanded to seven events, one per month, from April through
October. Open all cars and motorcycles, MM events are conducted on Friday nights with gates now
opening at 8 PM and racing continuing until 3 AM. On four of the seven Friday nights, the GIR Junior
Dragster program will be contested from 4:30 PM until 8 PM. During one MM event, (May 12th), The
MM event will include qualifying for the first event in GIR’s six-race Outlaw Pro Modified Series, as well.
Open Test-n-Tune Events
Along with the scheduled Tuesday SCSS and Wednesday Slicks-n-Bikes programs, Gateway
International Raceway will also hold several other Test-n-Tune events open to all vehicles. These dates
include the first two events of the season, March 18th (Saturday), March 25th (Saturday), July 5th
(Wednesday), and the final Friday of the season on October 20th.
Saturday Bracket Racing Series
Gateway continues the nation’s richest weekly bracket racing series with thirteen point-earning events.
In a consolidation, Pro Motorcycle and Street Motorcycle Eliminators, previously contested on Friday
nights, will now compete on Saturdays with Super Pro, Cash Bash (1/8th mile), Pro, and Street
Eliminators. Gates open at 12 noon.
Major Championship Events
The newest National Championship event will be the two-day program for the Flowmaster American
Drag Racing League’s Outlaw Pro Modified Nationals. A Super Pro bracket race will also be contested
during the event with a purse to be announced. The Drag News Magazine Bracket All-Star tour will
present a two-day event, as well. Returning for the 2006 season are the NHRA Division 3/5 National
Open, The Screamin’ Eagle All-Harley Drag Racing Association Nationals, the Number One Parts,
Incorporated (NOPI) National Drag Racing Association Sport Compact Nationals, the Mobil1 World
Ford Challenge, Monster MoPar Weekend XXII, the United Black Drag Racers Association “Black
Sunday Weekend XII”, the Drag News Junior Dragster Nationals, and three MegaBucks bracket races,
including a new event specifically for motorcycles. GIR’s premiere event, the National Hot Rod
Association Sears-Craftsman Nationals, will return for its tenth anniversary in June.
Gateway Drag Racing School
For the tenth consecutive year, GIR will offer a free Drag Racing School comprised of six seminars
which cover every facet of street car racing and bracket racing. The classes are open to every racer,
crew member, spouse, child, significant other, friend of a friend, or kangaroo. GIR’s Drag Racing
School conducts classes on the first Thursday of each month from May through September. The dates
for the 2006 GIR Drag Racing School are May 4th, June 1st, July 6th, August 3rd, September 7th and
October 5th.No fees or registration are required. Classes begin at 7 PM and conclude by 10 PM.
Closed Dates
As in the past, there are several dates on the calender throughout the actual racing season during
which Gateway International Raceway will be closed. In 2006, those dates will be:
April 25 (Tuesday), April 26 (Wednesday), April 28 (Friday), and April 39 (Saturday):
Closed due to reconfiguring for NASCAR/ARCA stock car event on oval track
June 20 (Tuesday), June 21 (Wednesday), June 23 (Friday) and June 24 (Saturday):
Closed due to preparations for NHRA Sears-Craftsman Nationals.
July 4 (Tuesday) in observance of Independece Day.
July 25 (Tuesday), July 26 (Wednesday), July 28 (Friday), and July 29 (Saturday):
Closed due to reconfiguring for NASCAR/Craftsman Truck event on oval track.
