I just received this new front cover. Does anybody know if this hole is supposed to be there and just needs to be cleaned up or is this a casting flaw? Thanks.

hole

That hole is not used--your gasket will block it off--a stock GM cover also has that hole in it.

OK, thanks for the reply. I just wanted to be sure before I put a lot of preparation work into it.

Scott,

Look up Earl Brown's recipe for porting the cover. It is very good and shows you exactly what you need to do .

wait just a minute....

Are you asking about the hole on the gasket surface or the passage inside of the hole you have highlighted?????

it should NOT be close!! oil enters the cover thru the bottom hole, goes up thru the jagged hole, then enters the oil pump gear cavity. do not block it, clean it up if there is anything blocking the flow. look at it from the bottom where the gears go.
