Dumb newb question about oil cover replacement part

I'm putting a new oil cover on a timing cover and in the kit it came with a part that looks like it goes inside the cover on the end of the spring... Is this correct? If so, does it matter which direction the holes are facing or aligned? I've done a bunch of forum searches with no luck and I don't have an old one to compare except the ones already on my cars.

push it in just as you have it plunger first then spring , orientation doesnt matter , it works the same
