They have onsite smog checks in the middle of the road.

Driving this week with my grandfather I thought it was "just" a work crew that closed down 1 of 2 lanes on 4th street. As I got closer there was an OC Sheriff and a portable dyno/fan/meter setup! Luckily they were occupied smogging an old '70/80s chevy truck.

Wow.. my car would have been taken away:rolleyes:

FAWK those a$$ holes. I hate Irvine PD, those guys have nothing better to do but harass people. The icing on the cake was the day that Mike and I got pulled over in his wife’s twin turbo Z on the way into the car show at the Ford Motor Co. building in Irvine. The Sh!tty part was there were some high dollar cars behind us that making a ton of noise, and here we are in a bone stock car. LAME!!!!
 
they have those in covina annually. know your rights! you have the option to decline participation. they will probably take down your plates and send you to a ref or somthing like that but it is a survey most of the time.
 
Roadside smog checks

You guy's aren't alone. I was on my way to work a couple of weeks ago in my Roadmaster wagon when I crested a slight hill and noticed the sign "Survey crew ahead". I got a little closer and they had the road down to 1 lane with a CHP car parked on the shoulder. There was a roadside dyno and a Honda strapped onto it. I could only assume the guys conducting the "survey" were from the BAR. Needless to say they didn't even bat an eye at my wagon and just waved me by. I'm glad I wasn't driving my hot rod to work. It could have been the last time I made that mistake. :(

i drive for a living and see those all the time in all citys from san fernando to riverside... its always "survey crew ahead"....i don't know what happens if you get stopped and your car doesn't pass the test but i sure dont want to find out....

True, I read that its a survey crew most of the time. But now I need to "fix" the connection where my downpipe meets my sold worn out rusted used beat up "cat."

This is how it works, Busting drunks, smog offenders,searching old ladies in air ports,Anything imageable to protect the children as long as no discipline is involved & spotted owls are safe endeavors for politicians & it feels good, To go after real problems like immigration, border & crime control,wire tapping & monitoring terrorists, personal accountability etc. is too politically risky. The bureaucrats have & be correct & wouldn't want to offend the ACLU & the San Francisco liberals, Enjoy whats left of our freedoms.
 
This is getting scarier by the minute. Kalif also is in the process of trying to pass a bill to mandate cars 15 years and older to require smog annually in leiu of bi-annually. Not a pretty picture. I really had not planned on moving when I retire in 2.5 years, or quicker if the company that I work for has a say-so, but Kalif screwing with smog laws and enforcement of roadside checks (whether optional surveys or not) might force me to. I know that it is also getting harder to register your vehicle in another state.

Just thank the ricers for the crack down, They flaunt the laws & draw attention till big brother gets enough heat to do something about it. I don't see any of us older guys causing this, But do to profiling idiot's we all must be made to suffer equally, This isn't just specific to our hobby .It's affecting our whole way of life. Sadly I feel the worst is yet to come. the next country that we should liberate is San Francisco. Just study what Nancy Pelosi & her bunch have in store. Our cowardly Governor also is selling us out hes no better. Looks like the only thing that changed under recall when he was voted in with all his promises were one liberal for another & perhaps worst than the previous socialist Gray Davis. I'm done!
