Changing Injectors

I have removed the injectors and noticed sludge buildup in the pocket in the manifold where the injector connects. Is it wise to try to clean this out before installing the new injectors? If so what is the recommended method?

Yes it is wise. I used carb cleaner and a clean old white t-shirt that turned black and brown pretty quick. It cleaned up pretty easily.

I didnt have really bad buildup. It was basically discolored. There was one that was pretty ugly, but it really just looked like a big turd of dirty vaseline. When i cleaned that one i got a helper (my wife) to hold the shop vac hose right around it to suck up any possible debris. I really think it was vaseline because it was caked at the fuel rail too. I think when the PO changed the inj's he used too much.

I sprayed the carb cleaner on the shirt, wrapped a little of it around my little finger and went in.
