Burning oil

no smoke at startup...doesn't start until after it running a few minutes
really bad on deceleration.

where do I start checking?

engine has about 8-10k on it

pull off the up pipe and see if you are sucking oil into the intake. You should run a Delco PCV valve, usually stops sucking oil.

Did you run the break-in period with regular oil and not synthetic?

I've been meaning to changd the PCV valve....only thing I've neglected.
I've always run regular oil. Just replaced the cam and lifters.

Maybe a turbo seal. Evidenced by oil on the exhaust side.

That's what I was thinking. I did a search and saw that the previous owner had the exact same problem and that was the fix.

Ign Mod and coil pack. Mine smoked on a new motor until i changed both units together. Now, no smoke

both are new....maybe 500 miles on them. Replaced them trying to find a spark issue.
