well after replacing the flexplate, center completely busted out, the car still wont move.

nothing, no foward no reverse. after talking with some folks, census is either the converter or the front pump or both. opinon has it that its the front pump because "even if the converter blew out i would still have movement, just alot of slipage".

anyone have input? converter and trans are less than 3k from new. converter is just a d5 "hd". thanks

Well, it's highly improbable that both the front pump and the torque converter have had a catastrophic failure. An easy check of the front pump would be to observe the fluid level on the dipstick before & after starting the engine.

If the pump is working, the fluid level should go down considerably from where it started out.

BTW, how much clearance did you have between the converter and the flexplate?

What Greg said or

pull a cooler line
You will know if pump is pumping.

thanks greg and bruce. ill check it out. with the clearance question, im confused. just had the flexplate bolted to the converter. the center was still bolted to the crank and the outside was still bolted to the converter.

He's asking about when the conv. is not bolted to the flexplate. You should have about 3/16 clearance with the conv. pushed into the trans. as far as it will go.
