Brakes are shot. What happened?

Decided to take my GN to work and I noticed the brake light was on. I drive down the block and the brake pedal gets REALLY stiff and the car doesn't stop. I pull up to the house and notice the brake fluid seems to be bubbling over the cylinder. I know these stock brakes are notoriously bad but...

Sounds like your powermaster took a poop. Do a search on powermaster vs vacuum and you'll have enough material discussing your options to keep you busy for the rest of your life.

Does the entire system need to be replaced cause I've heard they run around $500??

Yeah, they can get expensive. You kind of have two options if you want to keep the system. You can replace the whole thing with a used/remanned setup, or you can fix yours. Either way can be pricey depending on what's wrong. If you go here Brake System you will find some good reading and T/S info.
