The loclal hardware store has 99.9% pur "Methyl hydrade". is this the same as "denatured" ? Can the MH be used and how ? thanks.

Well, I thought methyl hydride was Methane....at any rate, it is not denatured...I would not try it until better informed as it may be more like methanol which is very corrosive and you need a good pump for it.

Little Info

Got this from researching the web.

Q: Is there a difference between Methyl Hydrate, Methanol, and Wood Alcohol?

A: Although referred to by many different names, there is no difference between these products.

Q: Is there a difference between Denatured Alcohol and Methanol, or are they the same?

A: They are not the same. Denatured Alcohol is an ethanol-based product and, therefore, less toxic than Methanol. In most workshop applications, either one can be used. If a manufacturer specifies one in particular, use the one recommended.

Pure ethanol is much less toxic than pure methanol (pure here means alcohol and maybe water, but no other alcohol mixed in). Denatured alchol is ethanol plus something added to make it poisonous so you can't drink it - this makes it cheaper because you don't have to pay all the whiskey taxes :). However, the most common denaturant is methanol! So it may be true that denatured alcohol is less toxic than pure methanol, but not by much.
