16 volt systems are fine. They are quite common actually. I'll be using one myself.
Once the charger is on though the voltage is up around 20 and it becomes a bit much for some devices. The ECU would be OK, but the data logger doesn't like it. If nothing else, it's not a great idea to have the car turned on with a 16 volt battery charger anyway.
