    While you are checking things check the brake switch. It brakes the TCC circut when you press on the brake. Check the crank sensor for the starting problem.

    Here is a different approach. Take your lifters apart and put a spacer in them to limit the travel to .020-.030. Set your preload at .010.

    what happened to these main bearings?

    Detonation That is what made the ends of the main bearing move inward and the cap walk. It was all over after that. Same thing happened to the rod bearing in the third picture.

    Lifter Bores and Block Strength

    That will not present any problem. Need to clean the rust out. You may want to bush the lifter bores to pick up some oil pressure.
