Sorry this might be a bit long.

I'm interested in purchasing a 1987 GN with only 22k miles. I want to use this as my daily driver to work. I've been warned by many that the Grand National is not a daily driving car. Besides the daily driving, it's an out of state vehicle I'm trying to get into to California. Another issue i've been warned with. Also I was told that the AC cannot be charged in CA and will need to be converted. I thought I would post this because you all have one and could give some good advice. When I mean daily driving, Mon- Fri about 12 miles each way (in traffic).

Thanks, your input is valuable.
Steve

Not recommended daily driver especially in traffic unless it's a beater that you don't care if it gets stolen rear ended broken into sideswiped sun baked and destroyed by unlicensed drivers. As far as a.c. issues and inspection in call if its modified good luck getting a sticker. A.c. conversion on the other hand relatively easy.

GN’s in California as a daily driver is testing your luck. Main reason is it’s gold mine to a thief, even if you drive it to work and back and it’s secured and safe at your job. The thief will start noticing you and your daily drive home. California is not the safest place for a GN period. Especially if you’re in the Bay Area, Ca or SoCal, Ca

^^^^^^This times 10.

Buy it to have fun with, but not as a DD. Some low life thief will steal it the first time you leave it in a public parking lot unattended. It takes about 20 seconds, if that. ANY G-Body is prone to the same fate, but GN's are especially coveted by thieves/chop shops.

Ask me how I know.

Like all have mention, not a good thing for daily driver, unless it's being use as a bait car
Insurance highly to guarantee your money back

If David Spade could do it there so can you. ;)

Charge it outside of Kalifornia one problem solved.

Sean Penn tryed it long time ago and got his stolen in Berkeley, Ca while he was having lunch and he had a Glock registered to him in the glove box.

Sean Penn?

I really don't care that it happened to that F*^ktard.

I'm jus' sayin. The dude is a real ......................

Spend $2K for a beater to get you 24 miles back and forth to work, spend $20K and get a TR to enjoy the weekends with, not worth it to drive every day and risk damage, sitting going no where in California traffic, or having it stolen. You can recharge the air, find some R12 on amazon or flea bay and do it yourself with a set of gauges, or have it converted to R134A.
I personally drive mine to my shop about 3 days a week, not have absolutely no stop and go traffic, and it gets pulled indoors, even with a outdoor camera system, so prying eyes and sticky fingers stay away.
Like TurboTguy said, only takes about 20 seconds, and your car will be gone.

Thanks to everyone for leaving a comment. The five other folks I spoke to said the exact same thing you guys did. I will look for one to garage and drive on the weekends. Thanks again for the input. I really appreciate it.

I used mine as a daily driver for over ten years. Just got tired of not have AC in SOCAL summer.
I would just park it when it was visible for me. I had an alarm that alerted me know if someone was messing with it. Then later I added the CLUB to help some more. No issues at all.

Risky no matter what you do. Always keep your guard up even if you have a garaged weekend driver. Mine was driven daily for 4 years before it was stolen the 1st time. Then stolen again when I was out in it one night. These cars attract a lot of attention, and it isn't always good. Have as many theft deterrents as possible. A column guard lock doesn't hurt either. Be careful. I was lucky and got mine back both times w/minimal damage. I won't leave mine anywhere now if possible. I hate even to leave it at a shop for repair. Too many idiots out there that don't give a damn.

Here is a better alternative to the club. Thieves just cut the steering wheel instead of the hardened club. Takes seconds, there are videos of it.

It locks the brake pedal in the up position using the floor. The break pedal steel is much harder to cut and there is no room. Don't buy the ones that lock it to the steering wheel, same issue as the club. You could technically drive it with the e-brake but the thief will think twice as to if it will work on an old car, or whether you disconnected it.

I use it in addition to a column lock. They see 2 big red devices they have to defeat without knowing what else you have (kill switch, etc.)

Definitely agree regarding not using it for a daily driver though. If they really want it, they'll just jack you when you're waiting at a light. Happened to a friend of mine recently (not a turbo Regal). There were 3 of them. One on each door with guns drawn, and a 3rd that patted him down as soon as he got out and made him lie down on the ground.

Who'd a thunk that in these times a nice Sunday drive in your ol' pride and joy could be so friggin' scary?

Sean Penn is a libtard moron.

At least David Spade drove a Himmy too, as a daily.... ;)

Find one ready to drive in primer nobody will bother it.

Don't buy any of these cars/trucks either they get stolen by the TON.:rolleyes:

" Here’s the NICB’s list of most stolen used cars, with the “most popular” model years noted and the total number of units taken for each nameplate during 2016:
  1. Honda Accord (1997), 50,427 stolen
  2. Honda Civic (1998), 49,547
  3. Ford F-Series Pickup (2006), 32,721

  4. Chevrolet Silverado Pickup (2004), 31,238
  5. Toyota Camry (2016), 16,732
  6. Nissan Altima (2015), 12,221
  7. Ram Pickup (2001), 12,128
  8. Toyota Corolla (2015), 11,989
  9. Chevrolet Impala (2008), 9,749
  10. Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee (2000), 9,245 "

Not to worried about it getting stolen. I work on a military base which is secured. Once I’m home it’s in the garage.

Thanks for the input about the daily driving. I guess that idea is out.

If your work in a military base then you already have the mind set to be aware of surroundings. Then, honestly I would say drive it everyday. There’s a point where I like to think is our cars are soo bad ass that why not drive’em everyday. You can set it up to be everyday driver and with stand traffic cooling conditions(mine can be sitting in traffic @90* temp. and the highest I seen it go up to 180*) and I turn on the high speed fan switch and it will go down between 165-170* at a stand still. Enjoying the car everyday is the best compared to a weekend car
