Please is the X Ray Thread...I will be adding addioional pictures when I get back for the Norwalk trip....thanks

Hi X-ray. I know little about all the actual tech of the GNX's. But to my knowledge, they stayed with the factory air filter box, correct? With all the mods done to bump up the performance over the regular GN's, wouldn't a modified air filter intake setup be a simple no-brainer? Or was it determined that the factory air-box isn't really that restrictive?

That is a very good question :D …There are many things that go into the air-box and the filter element when engineering a vehicle. There are durability issues to the system that range from water contamination to the sound of the engine and of course the filtration of contaminants to prolong the life of the engine. If you look at several different makes and models of vehicles you will see different designs of air boxes and some strange shapes, this is to tune the system for the proper sound and performance needed to meet the program goals.
I do not know the specifics of the Grand National but the changing of a system is not as simple as slapping on a straight pipe and putting on a K&N filter. It may perform better on the strip but you pay a price in one if not all of the other categories. It’s a risk versus rewards decision and the factory likes little or no risks. Best Regards

With all this talk about the GNX and it's very cool appearance, I was wondering where I could get a set of the repo fender vents. My car needs a front fender anyway, from a little kid learning to ride a bike. I have found 2 off of a parts car. Since I can save the originals, I would like to put the vents in these ones. Can anyone help me??? Much thanks,

Parts

What did ASC do with all the Grand National Rims and parts that came off the cars to turn them into GNX's?

Most vendors will have something like the originals or even ebay. Not too sure of the quality though! I had some from postons, and they didn't hold too well during a "spirited" drive down the freeway. Replaced those with some off ebay, and both sides have already cracked.
Maybe X Ray knows of good reproductions...

danko has the most solid ones ,
but will need about an hours worth of sanding to make look good before paint

The part were put in a trailer and sold in bulk  ... I do not know who bought them sorry :(

This car #33 is now owned by...

The only vehicle I know that was modified at ASC tech center was GNX 33 the founder Heinze Prechter car (that was just sold). ASC had many franchise facilities that installed sunroofs in any vehicle. There may have been a vehicle modified at one of these facilities but you could have taken any vehicle to one of these outlets and had one put in. This is possible. Sorry that all I know on this subject.

Richard Clark. Imagine that.;)
I see it daily. That car with the astro roof was a one only built for Mr. McClaren himself.
He also has one with 5 miles on it.
And his driver.

had a question for you X-Ray would you know of anyone selling replica emblems (GNX ones) for a good deal and as well a company that sells the flares and vents that are a good match to the originals not 100% but a good fit and the rigid vents not the flimsy plastic ones I want to clone one

Thanks brian

I do not know anyone that sells the replica emblems anymore. Kirban sold some very good ones that I believe (I may be wrong) were even made by the original manufacturer, but GM put a stop to that. The best bet would be e-bay, if any individual bought some in the past and is now willing to sell them.
As for the vents the plastic parts are good as long as they are not made from vacuformed ABS. The vacuformed parts are made by forming the plastic at relatively low temperatures over a mold. The same heat that forms it at relatively low temperatures deforms it when it sees heat from the cars environment. Exterior parts in that area need to withstand temperatures from 160-180 degrees Fahrenheit. I do know there are some good ones out there but I do not know who sells them. Just stay away from the vacuformed parts.
As to the wheel flare I know parts are made but I do not know what suppliers make the best ones. Regards

Good thread Rick,

I should dig out some of the old GNX stuff.

Any interest in doing another run of Turbo Shields?

Joe

Here is a photo of a template from ASC to reinforce Ricks awesome photos. There is one for the front and one for the rear.

I would be interested in the covers,as well as any other parts you may have for sale do you still sell those NOS wheel decals, and how about the fender vent??
what else are you selling ??
Thanks brian

Turbo shield , bracket info.

I am glad that everyone likes this thread……I greatly appreciate all the kind words.:D As for selling parts or making turbo shields, I do not have any and will not be making any. I did not make the aftermarket shields that were previously sold. As for any of the parts I do have none are for sale at this time (sorry).

If you are looking at turbo shields that are for sale (an educated buyer is a better buyer) this picture of the bracket illustrates the mounting attachment for the GNX shield. So when looking at turbo shields being sold, look at the mounting boss back side of the shield and the witness marks from the bolts. If they are round they were not installed on a production bracket they probably used washers that were used as spacers to mount the shield on a stock GN bracket. Therefore the shield may be an aftermarket part.

Rick, I know you did not make the covers I was refering to the GNX turbo shields I made a few years back. Below is a photo of one of my repo shields.

You can easily tell my aftermarket turbo shield. Welds are superior to an OEM shield and we used more individual pieces of metal. The method you desribe above to possibly determine an oem vs aftermarket shield may not hold true. As I sold a bunch of these shields to GNX owners that put them on their car and put the original in a box so it would not get damaged. Therefore even the repo shields would have the square witness marks as well.

If demand is high enough I might try and do some more. I'd probably need to do a run of 100 of them.

Joe
