No matter how you qualify it, Steve Morse should have been on that list. His ability to play, his ability to write, his ability to back-up others, studio sessions,...
Also, he lived as a rocker.
Ted Nugent was great, too.
Paul Stanley of Kiss;
Steve Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd - maybe???

You have got to be kidding me?! Eddie VanHalen #70 behind Ike Turner!!!

Jimmy Page #9?!

Keith Richards all the way at #10? I didn't think he really played the guitar. I saw the Rolling Stones on HBO last year and Ron Wood played all the guitar solos.

No Ace Frehley?

Another B.S. list from Rolling Stone!

That list is such BS

where's:
Eric Johnson
Steve Vai
Yngwie Malmsteen
Jake E Lee
Joe Satriani

and that's just off the top of my head without giving this any though.

Now that list looks much better!

I think it should reade: #1 Stevie Ray Vaughn- #2 Kenny Wayne Sheppard ( no mention of kenny- the list isnt valid! )#3 Joe Satriani.

Well, you gotta put Hendrix in there. If there was no Hendrix, most of these guys wouldn't exist.:)

Stevie Ray...definitely

Uhh did they forget the great Zakk Wylde!!!!!
Eddie VH at 70? and Randy Rhoades at 85? Sorry, but Randy did more with the guitar in his very short life than half those guys could do in their lifetime.
What about George Lynch and the greats that have been mentioned already in this thread? Unbelievable

It's Rolling Stone trying to be cool and failing miserably

No argument here.

I agree with that great list above and we are just gettting started. I personally like

Frank Marino
Joe Satriani
Yngwie Malmsteen
And an under rated guitarist named Gary Richrath of REO IMO.

Drew

B-U-C-K-E-T-H-E-A-D!!!!!

Listen to 'Jumpman' and then to 'Sketches of Spain' and then I dare anybody to say he's not the best and the most versatile.

Yes, I have a couple of his CD's. He is good, BUT like you just said, he plays SRV tunes, and his own tunes sounds like SRV. I think when you talk about the BEST guitarists of all time, you must take originality into account. That is what sets Hendrix, SRV, Van Halen.......apart. They were innovators, and stood out from hteir peers. Just my opinion.:)

Jimi Hendrix probably influenced 90% of the rest of the guys on that list, but I don't think that he was an amazingly good guitar player in comparsion to the others on the list.

Actually, I believe he's incredibly overrated, but that's just me. Anybody can get high and play a completely ****ty rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

Tom Morello > *

Halle-f***in'-luyah!! I could'nt agree more! Also, you noted Tom Morello...hard to believe he started life out as just another punk kid in Libertyville, IL. While I agree that he is an incredibly schooled player, I really wish he would showcase it more often. (....P.S., Other than Morello, how many p***ed-off 'rockers' bitchin' about 'The Man' can actually say they have a degree in sociology to back it up?)

Another BS list by RS. Hendrix is/was great but probably not number #1. Chuck Berry??? Gimme a break! BB King?? same! They need to throw the list out and start all over. Was this strictly by playing ability or influence??

And Joni Mitchell just flat out rocks! She can outplay Johnny Winter any day.:D
