I have been thinking about continuing my education and becoming a social worker. Helping those less fortunate than I am has always been the most rewarding undertaking for me, any words of advice regarding schooling and what I should expect?

Thank you in advance,
Gregg

Terrible pay.
I just want to do something worthy for my fellow man, woman and child while staying close to my mom and dad as they age. I made less than $15/hr as a cop but was expected to die for complete fools, now that is the meaning of terrible pay my friend.

I believe you can do something worthy for your fellow man and contribute without it being your job.

I'm not in the biz, & not to sound dramatic or negative BUT I would say you can expect a lot of disappointment from your good will being unappreciated by many of the people your just trying to help, though I'm sure there are diamonds in the rough that you'll deal with once in evry other blue moon that will make the endeavor worth your while, wish u luck man the work sounds interesting, better than screwing with wires evry day.

Some get it and some don't.

Sorry for asking.

Close thread please.

Don't be sorry. Maybe I don't "get it". I am sure being a social worker has its moments. I just got over "making rent" in my 20's.

I got "over" making rent 40yrs ago (my world) but all is good my friend, I just thought I would open another venue of discussion. I just feel that I am not doing enough where a true difference can be made regardless of monetary compensation.

Peace my brother.

Your doing a lot by being with your mom and dad as they age because most of the time moms and dads don't have there Kids around or some just don't bother

You can work a decent job, volunteer helping veterans and still have time to spend time with you parents.

Allow me to touch on a few point's that have been mentioned and are appreciated, thank you.

1. I have about 70+ job applications out with no success. All this online application stuff disregards true assets.
2. I started volunteering 5yrs ago at a homeless shelter. I actually applied for a job at this shelter but was turned down for a cooks position. Heck I know how to heat up pre-cooked food!
3. I only have about 20 good years of work left in me and would like them to be as rewarding as I can make them.

I guess I am just frustrated. I NEED A JOB!

Too bad you don't live in NH, we could use a trainee.

I am ready and willing to travel if you think I may meet your needs. Had issues trying to send you my resume' via conversation but I am "green flag". I have that kart race this weekend, committed, but can hit the road next week (fishing rod in hand of course).

Thank you,
Gregg

If you think your life was ay risk being a cop, being a social worker is just as bad.

I knew someone who did it for a living here in MA.

The pay was terrible and they were over worked.

One of the biggest parts of the job was following up on beneficiaries to make sure they weren’t leaching off of the system.

Every day this person had to go to some of the worse neighborhoods in the state and enter these peoples houses.

Mind you. Mostly all were scamming in one way or another so they are already in a bad mood when they answer the door and see who it is.

You’re the douchbag that will take away their free ride.

There were many times the SW was already nervous and next thing you know there was a second guy standing blocking the exit and a couple more would come out of the bedroom and just stand there with intimidating looks.

No back up, no gun, cause it’s not allowed, no way out.

Are you the one to tell them they are shut off and point out all the infractions?

Good luck on your quest to help.

You have been warned.

I can see you mean well but the only help the majority of the feeders want is your money.

You can't helps those that do not want help and only want a hand out.
