Is there supposed to be a gear shifter selector tab?

I was driving my new TTA at night and I looked down at the gear shifter selector and the D light indicator was not illuminated. I took the console apart and did not see how it all was supposed to work. My question is: is my car missing something that tells the driver the position that the shifter is in? Thanks for any advice you can give. Don

Only the 91-92 shifter plate have a actual indicator on it (plastic piece that moves with the lever and points at the D R or whatever), they all have a light in them to illuminate the area where the D R 1 2 etc are.

If you like the 91-92 style you can get one off e-bay or from your local junk yard and just swap them over 5 min job

Thanks for the explanation. I thought I was loosing it. This is the only car that I've owned that did not actually show you what gear you were in.

I wondered the same thing. I thought this was just another crazy thing that broke for no good reason while the car sat. Thanks Jan for solving that problem for me too.
