how to identify LS,s

i have an LS in 85GN runs great, 4L80E.

how do i tell what displcement it is,looks like truck engine by the inlet manifold.

?4.8,, 5.3,, 6.0,, 6.2,, ??

and what are 317 heads and how to tell?

317 heads usually mean it a lq4 or a lq9 ,look in front of the motor by the water pump on the driver side you will see it stamp 6.0 or 5.3 or even. 6.2

If you can get to it, write down the serial number from the pad at the LH rear corner of the block and call a dealer. They can tell you exactly what it "was" when it left the factory.

another way is look for the tab sticking out of the head gasket on the passenger side..i bought a 5.3 but turned out to be a 4.8....the block for a 4.8 and 5.3 are the same. the 5.3 has the longer stroke crank...the 6.0 will have that on the block and like what has already been said the 317 heads...hth..Bob
