Correct length for shifter cable?

Ive been dealing with shifter cables ever since i bought this car (july 07).

The first one broke during my first time at the track (the cable pushing the end casings apart).

So as a replacement i bought one ATP 26.15" shift cable, and one ATP 29.75" cable. I forget exactly which one it was, but the first one i tried did the same thing as the initial cable. Now the one i have in there now works, but the shift handle is too loose for my liking.

My question is.... is one of the lengths of shift cable that i bought the correct factory length? If not, what is the correct length?

I don't know how long the cable is but when I went to advance auto to get mine I think it was the shorter one that was offered, it was a while ago. But I do remember it was the more expensive one. Had to do a little drilling on the cable eyehole to slip it onto the shifter, but other than that it worked out great. Then I had to readjust a few things from the sloppy cable that was on there before.
