I was browsing at BuickGod.com and i found this helpful VIN breakdown chart. I have a question about it though. I own a 1983 Buick T-Type and one of my VIN numbers doesn't match. On the 8th segment, my # is 8 and that number is not on the chart. I would like to know why. Do i have an extra Engine option or something...? I even checked my Title to make sure that i didn't write down the #'s wrong.

Thanks,
Besso.

That chart, like most, is generic for all years and misses some of the less common engines.

Your VIN is:
1G4AK478xDHxxxxxx

The Turbo V6 engine was:
G = 1978 2bbl/Turbo
3 = 1978-82 2bbl/Turbo (oops, should read 4bbl/Turbo)
8 = 1983 4bbl/Turbo
9 = 1984/85 SFI/Turbo
7 = 1986/87 SFI/IC/Turbo

I also have an "8" for the 8th/engine digit on my '83. :)

engine vin code

My 78 has a 3 vin code 231 4 bbl. ,engine option LC8. This concurs with the 78 Buick manual. A 78 G vin code is the 2 bbl version, LC5 engine option.

Just to confuse the issue.:)

DOH!!!!

DOH!!!! :eek: I made a copy and paste boo-boo. The VIN 3 should read 4bbl. (The 2bbl was only available in 1978.)

Here it is again (and I'll edit it above)

The Turbo V6 engine was:
G = 1978 2bbl/Turbo
3 = 1978-82 4bbl/Turbo
8 = 1983 4bbl/Turbo
9 = 1984/85 SFI/Turbo
7 = 1986/87 SFI/IC/Turbo

Thanks Peter. :)

When you go to a parts store (does not matter who) and you tell them that you have a 83 V6 Turbo 4bbl they always say that it's a vin 3. I have tried to tell them that it's a 8, but no luck.

don't feel bad.

I work at a damn parts house and have fought tooth and nail to try to get them to change it to no prevail. Oh well just a fact of life I have to get used to. :confused:
