    What pistons are these?

The pins are heavy to help match the weight of factory pistons. Replace with lighter ones if you are going to re balance. In theory you wouldn't have to add heavy

flatten the thrust surface on the front cover?

The gear debris will get past the pickup screen and also the pump. I have pictures of the block and crank oil passages completely clogged of gear and caused a spun bearing. Don't take the easy way out. Exactly the same issue when blowing a stock head gasket.

flatten the thrust surface on the front cover?

More important is did you completely disassemble to clean all the gear debris? That will cause a spun bearing. Most people don't. The stock pump is fine.

    Engine install technique

Yes it is i've done it a few times. You need a yolk for the trans to keep it from leaking all the fluid out. You also need a leveler or "lazy susan" to tilt it up and out. I'd make sure the trans lines go in at the same time. Wait until its in to install the trq converter bolts under the car.

Replacement of stock pistons without spending a grand and changing everything?

Let me start over. Cheap pistons are not as common second hand but they are out there. You could look for a used set of TRW style stock replacement pistons but they will most likely be .030 over. for about $100 if your lucky. I bought some last year. I think this is what you are looking for. JE...

Replacement of stock pistons without spending a grand and changing everything?

Not possible, If your talking just the piston cost, there are plenty of deals on pistons second hand. I bought a new set of JE with rings and pins for $500. You will still have to balance the crank. I'm not sure what you mean about changing everything..
