Speaking from experiance ,the rental company is liable, but here is the catch,if it is one of the large rental companies , ie enterprise etc... ,they are self insured and your @ there mercy. I suggest contacting you insurance commisioner of your state , there usually a lot of help.

Just replaced timing chain ,valve springs . Before i put my valve covers back on. I fillled it up with oil, and turned it over 15 to 20 seconds to check my work. Everything seems fine , but i get a tapping noise , drivers side valve train ,after i quit turning it over that last for 20 seconds ...
