Looked at one today

I went and looked at a GNX today. 18,000 mile car, some repaint work on the nose and fenders, cracked dash (by the speakers) bad antenna, air filter assembly (factory) gone, no jacket, complete history including info from when it was stolen and recovered (thieves actually put most of the miles on it over 9,000 it was gone for 9 nine months) stock turbo still on car, has a weird "security" feature... you have to turn the left turn signal on in order to start it... I can see where there are some wires cut and spliced under the hood, I presume someone has created the security feature with a relay under the dash somewhere. Fuel pressure gauge added to the rail, adjustable regulator, chip installed, throttle body coolant tubes bypassed. Needs a sunvisor recovered.... any idea of a decent price for this car? Its nice, I have not driven it yet but I want to go back with cash in hand to be able to discuss and drive. Not looking to flip, not looking for a go fast car, just want an X that runs well and is really nice. Your input is appreciated!

Did you :
1. Contact Doug on the registry to confirm the vin and have share any info on it ?
2. Check eng/trans for matching numbers ?
3. Stock turbo from a GN , or is it a real GNX turbo ?
4. No jacket = $1,500-1,800 if u want one .
5. Any of the ASC paperwork there ?
6. Orig window sticker ?
7. Correct GNX wheels ?
8. GNX book ?
9. GNX supplemental manual ?

Depending on the price of the car , all of this should be taken into consideration . If it is a very good deal , and you just want to get into an X not concerned about the future collectability of it have at it , but if it is $55k and up , wait it out , it sounds like nicer ones are out there.

First thing I thought was : does it have a clean title? I think that could greatly impact the true value of the car and it may hinder a potential sale later.

Being a recovered theft car I would almost think the Title is flagged as a salvage or rebuilt.

I would be ok with the title issue as long as there was proof that it was stolen and recovered. And the price is right!
If he main reason for purchase is investment probably not the right car.

Got the vin a few minutes ago, checking with Doug today
I have not checked the numbers as of yet, wanted to see it first and start my research
Looks to be the correct GNX turbo
No Jacket
No ASC paperwork
copy of the window sticker
Correct wheels (different tires)
Yes the book comes with it
Did not see the manual

The title is clear, I have the vin and I am going to check it out with Doug.

I'd say anything around 50K would be a good deal ! Clear title makes it sound like a great car. Not to low of miles to drive. You can enjoy this one!
Good luck!

Having a hard time deciding what the right thing to do is... once I got the vin, I googled it. Its been for sale several times. I went and looked at it at one price, but I found it on another site $10,000 less than the original site I saw it on.... Something does not add up.... it is on the registry, not with its current owner (dealer) or the last owner (local collector)...It's also the very first one I have looked at to buy... I have always said not to get impatient...

With that kind of money at stake I would pass or find somebody that knows them well to look at it with you. I tend I to be very cautious though

I have followed these cars since before I could drive, this is the ONLY car I have lusted after. I have a pretty decent knowledge of them, but I don't get that awesome feeling that I normally get when I find a car I am looking for. Some people know what I mean and some do not. I just "know" when its the right car... I have not felt that way yet. I am just not sure if its due to the car not being the right one or the fact that I am thinking of coughing over the cold hard cash to buy one!

My $.02... If it's at a dlr, it's a fishy deal. PASS!:vomit:

Yeah, like I said its a small specialty car dealer... however, he did not seem to know much more than an advertisement would have told you about the cars... I think I'd rather buy from someone who has owned the car and respected it for what it is.

What kind of money are we talking here?

I bought my 87 GN in 1992 , soon after had the desire to want/own an X , pretty much like your statement , lusted after one . In 2003 I found a 9k orig mile X in the high $20k's locally , but passed as I was doing house improvement/work , and figured I'd wait a couple years and pick one up then. Then the explosion in 2005 with certain musclecars hit , including this one , made them pretty much double . DAM !!!!! Now I didn't have enough scratch for it .
Fast forward to recently (about a year ago) , as I have always followed them to see what the market is on them , I noticed they were a little softer then the years past , so now is the time to get one .
With that , I will say my criteria is/was a 5-15k orig mile X , and wanted the most paperwork/documents as I could find one with .
Every time I found one for sale , I did back research on it , google the number , do a search here for archives about it , the registry, etc.
With that , I looked at 3 others before I bought the one I did buy , you are correct , at least for me , in about 2 minutes after first seeing the car , I know/knew if I was going to be buying it . Trust your gut instinct like you said , if you don't get that feeling , move on , take your time , don't impulse buy one , don't settle for one just to have one , cause right after you buy it , that "one" comes up for sale !!!!!!
On another note , GO SEE IT FOR YOURSELF !!!!! Take the initial responses/opinions about a specific X , but go do the deal/inspect it in person . Case in point , there is a certain GNX that was for sale , did the research on it HERE , hand full of members that knew/saw the car in person commented how nice it was , so clean , best thing since sliced bread . Let me note I do paint/body/restoration , so my eye is better than the average person to see things , so , basically I was going to buy it , drove 577 miles with the $$$$$$$ , get there , and like the 2 others , in about , and I'm not exaggerating , in about 20 seconds I knew I wasn't buying it !!!!!! WOW , peoples description of this one is/was way off , as well as how the seller was showcasing it to me !!!!! Talk about disappointment .
This is my contribution to you to maybe have you get something closer to what you will/would be happy with . But , certainly price weighs a factor , if one comes up that is an absolute deal/bargain , go for it , but if paying good $$$$$$$ , again , if you don't get that feeling , pass .
Also remember , these cars have numbers , history/facts/conditions/opinions that get posted on the web , stay there !!!!! There are some X's out there now that got dragged thru the mud as not a good one to buy/own . But then again , everybody wants something different in an X as far as what they are going to do with it .
Good luck with your search , hope you find the right one !!!

Thank you very much for this reply... it is EXACTLY how I feel. I know better to than to buy the first thing that comes along... it's hard though when you have waited so long to be able to afford to play the game and then try to find the right one!

a GNX wud be considered terribly slow by todays standards. if u wanna go fast then buy a 10 second turn-key grand national vs a stock GNX that needs paint.
