figured I'd post in this section...

Took the car out today goofing around stopped at a stop sign on a somewhat slow road. Wanted to see what kind of boost I can hold that car at now with the new converter. Started brake boosting and got it up to 10# before the BFgoody street tires decided they couldn't hold on any longer.
Let off the brake and rode the smokey burnout thru 3rd gear:biggrin: make it about a mile down the street to another stop sign. turned right and started going around a bend when 2 county sheriffs raced up behind me and hit the lights and sirens.
Cop asks me if the road back there looked like a dragstrip? I said uh, no, it doesn't.
Says he was sitting right there:eek: and couldn't believe I was doing that right in front of him. I didn't even see him:confused:

Long story short. He wrote me for "Unlawful Start". $166 bucks.
Was pretty cool about it and started talking to me about his 05 GTO. said he would bring it out to race me but would be to embarassed to get beat by a V-6.

I might take it to court. Got to ask a lawyer friend a few questions 1st.

Oh god that's funny!
Sorry...but I have a very vivid imagination and I can just see what his dash cam video must have caught...you know....the dash cam video that he'll show in court if you challenge his ticket...it's gonna show you in your car going by with the tires on fire...
Might even make the highlight reels on "Worlds Craziest...";)

"Unlawful start...?"
Just say it wasn't the start that was the problem....it was the finish....

You got off easy, unlawful start here in California carries a 500+ dollar fine and a 2 point against your license, don't ask me how I know.. :(

^^^that's a stiff fine^^^ it also carries 3 points here:mad: and I have a CDL so I can't take the driver improvement course to keep points from accessing.

I might drop my CDL then aplly for the course. It's not like I use my CDL just needed it about 15 years ago for a job. Figured I'd hang on to it just in case but it is becoming more of a hassle to keep it.

You're lucky. Coulda got you for reckless driving and thats a mandatory stay in the crossbar motel here in Fla. ;)

Wish I could have seen his face when you lit em up !!!

Here in Missouri I can get that turned into a $166.00 parking ticket, no points. They just want the money here. Good luck.

you got off light!
Reckless driving
Driving to endanger
Speeding

Instant loss of license here in MA

If you can't find someone to fix it, you gotta eat this one.

D

Yup, I would say you have to take this one for the team....Not only do they probably have your entire hole shot on "video" Remember what you said " there were 2 officers that pulled you over" Chances in court dont look good...just pay the 166 bucks, and dont loose more money taking off work for a ticket you can't beat...In my opinion..

Unlawfull start ..never heard of that one. Lucky you didnt get reckless driving. Glad he was cool.

I have had a few versions of the citation over the years.... "Laying Drag"......yes not a typo.

Also "Breaking Tread"

In Cali....if you get written for Wreckless Driving, it carries the same penalties on your record as a DUI.
It's a felony now so....you get booked....hefty fine....vehicle impounded....suspended license....and if they really want to make an example out of you they can seize your vehicle and make you watch as they put it through a car crusher...

That last little bit they tend to use only on repeat offenders who have been busted at organized street races or busted repeatedly for street racing in general...but a couple times a year you'll see a story on it in a local news paper. I remember one from a couple years back where they crushed two almost brand new Mustangs...

I agree with King Kong. Pay the fine and move on. It could have been worse. In the mid eighties I sold my 66 SS396 Chevelle with a 4-speed to my younger brother. He was sitting at a light one night and when the light turned green he dumped the clutch and smoked the tires through the intersection then let off. Unfortunately he didn't realize there was a cop behind him and immediately got pulled over. He was written up for reckless driving, lost his license for 6-mos and had to pay a fine of over $500.

Wow, reading that brought back memories…One night my friends and I were coming back from Atlanta in my T type and stopped on the side of I-20 W about two am in the morning to take a …… (Lots of beer earlier). Anyways we jumped back in the car, looked around and not a car anywhere so I cut a 4 or 5 high speed donuts on the interstate. We thought it was cool but the Georgia State Trooper a under the over pass did not agree. 7 points, 400 dollar fine, ground by parents for 2 weeks and luckly in did not get a DUI back.. in 1986.

WOW!!! Chicken.....A Car CRUSHER!!!! OMG! This is one time im glad in in Jersey, and not on the West Coast...whew man that sends chills thru my entire body.....Hey just think............All that work we Buick V6 guys do......Would be all for nothing in Cali  Hey one last ? Chicken...Who pays for the car if it still has payments

They guy who took the loan out still has to pay the loan....

I kinda already knew the poor guy was gonna have to still pay the loan.....Guess that means one thing for sure. Dont get caught with smoking tires in Cali....Or it might be your last hurrah...What a shame

You sure? I don't see banks giving loans out on cars if the state can seize and crush their collateral. Buyer could just walk and not pay the loan, but hey it's Cali...I could be wrong..

I did something similar here in Phoenix in a '64 Vette a while back and got a $300 ticket for "Wasting a Finite Resource".

Thanked the cop for being cool and paid it with no reservations.

I'm thinking you're like many of us here and you're old enough to know better than to pull that crap..........and the cop knew it too.

I also know how hard it is to not go ahead do it anyway.....and the cop knew that too.

This could have been a BUNCH of trouble for you. Better if you leave it alone.

Absolutely sure...a contract is a contract...if you borrow the $....you're obligated to pay it back whether you still have the collateral or not...and the bank does not need to worry about how the borrower loses his car...he still owes on the loan until it's paid off.
If you wreck it and have insurance to cover it...then the insurance pays....but they aint gonna pay if you get busted street racing....they'll just dump you for breech of contract and paying is up to you after that.

Now if you apply to finance a car and tell the bank up front that you need the car for street racing....they'll just tell you to get bent and go get a payday loan or something at 50%.

Sure....the person could always be a dead beat Occupy-er who expects others to bear the burden of his bad choices....but personally...I wasnt raised that way...I pay my debts whether they are under water or not...it's a matter of character and principle...

Ive gotten off of every single ticket I've ever been givin (knock on wood) 200 to the lawyer and he always wins on some kinda technicality. :D

You have to be very careful these days. My dad tells me stories all the times about the tickets he got for doing stuff like this, but nothing ever carried serious penalties like you are mentioning. My own story: I bought a 2000 Pontiac GTP before I got my license (this March, I will have had my license 1 Year!) and did some repair work to get it in driving condition. Within the first month of having my license, I was stopped for "Unlawful starting from a standing position" as the cop said. I was lucky enough NOT to get a ticket. I live in a town of maybe 2000 people AT MOST. We all know the cops, so he just warned me and told me to get out of here after being lectured about what the fines could have been. My dad tells me everyday that we are missing out on the fun because of these tight laws.. I believe him.
