Turbo suggestions for a 4.1 L street car?

Looking for suggestions on a good turbo for a 4.1 L street driven car? Varying a/r ratios? looking to keep a quick spool, preferably TE styles,
-4.1L
-mild cam
-unknown aluminum heads
 
id be interested in seeing wat a DBB 6768 would do with ur combo. Bison would know better. send him a PM with ur combo plans

I really liked the characteristic of my TA-49 on a bolt-on stock 3.8. with a 2800 stall I've now got a newer project that already has a 4.1 stage1 installed and trying to retain the same drivability. I was going to try a TE-44 but figure I might be better off jumping straight into a TE-60, figure the extra cubes will likey spool a TE-60, anyone elses thoughts? Let me know if I'm on the right track?

Pick up a billet 6262 for low 11 secong goals or a billet 6265 if you want to go in the tens.

The 44 and 60 use the same turbine wheel (T-31).
Their compressor wheels are only 1 mm different.
Neither should be be considered for a aluminum headed 4.1 motor.
I agree with jasjamz turbo recommendations.
 
I love the way my 6876 Spools on my 4.1. The car literally rips! I'm going to try my 72GTQ on it and see how she reacts. Mine is running a 9/11 3200 Lock up converter. The 44 or 60 will be far too small for the 4.1. We have tried it and it was a joke!:biggrin:
 
It all depends on the power you want to reach. If you have 9.5:1 CR and a strong bottom end and your heads are similar to a set of Champion GN1's that have some cleaning up then you have a lot of potential for power. You can do a lot with a very small compressor. 140mph trap speed is possible with a 66mm compressor. A fast ramp cam that works with the heads and CR with the proper torque converter, and any p trim 63mm or larger compressor and probably a 62 billet (though not achieved here yet) and a lot of other little things will make 9 sec power with the everything right. More or bigger is not usually better for a street car. Id like to see the 62 trim ex wheel in the 9's. Im thinking its totally possible with the right combo. To squeeze it out of a small compressor you need a purpose built engine. The number one fail item item is usually the converter. I see so many spend thousands on everything else only to buy a $$500 or cheaper converter. When you do that you leave a lot on the table.

Common 3 bolt ex turbos and what id look for if i was building an engine and wanted to have the fastest spooling setup out there to achieve the mph shown with off the shelf cam grinds and 8.7-9:1 CR and other supporting items:

You need a lot more than a turbo to make power as you will see that most havent/cant even come within 5mph of the above. Some have gone much faster than the above. The ta49 (same as te44) has been at least 121mph on an unopened engine, i went 124mph with the pt54 and its been over 130mph, ive gone 127mph with the 60-1 and its been a lot faster on some imports, the 6365 has been 134mph, the 6776 has been 139mph?(John Crawford), ive been 137mph with the 6680 and on my way to 140+ with it but i hurt the engine (114mph eighth), 6780 has been in the 9's in total street trim with a stock ecm on alky/93 (Melissa/Grumpy), Cruz has been over 150mph more than once with the 7168. JW has been over 150mph with it also. There are a lot of others that have hauled the mail with a lot less than would be expected. For a street driven car with a 8.5:1 CR, the common 212 grind, a good converter, and some tuning you can save a lot of $ going with a 6265 or smaller and still have a decent spool up. Keep in mind that the the hp potential and tech era of the turbo almost totally designates how one will spool compared to the next or previous. More power will need more turbo which will spool slower on the street without more expensive and finicky crap thrown at it. If you are looking for 130mph with a 3.8 or a 4.5 id still go with the same turbo almost everytime. Maybe slightly larger on the compressor but the ex wheel would be the same. Build something that will burn everyones ass by staying conservative when choosing. 9 out of 10 times it will be quicker and more fun to drive.

Not unless it was a true 60-1 with a ball bearing cartridge. The small turbine in the te60 would limit power way before the compressor was out of breath. Once you are over 450whp you will need to step up to a really good converter if you want to have the most power with the smallest possible turbo.

I'll be trying a 71GTQ 4 bolt on a 4.1 street car. I think it's a PTE 7180. Opinions? And what convert or shoul I go with...PTC 9.5?

We can't give you an opinion if you don't state your goals
 
Don't really have an expectation. 10.50 street car? Whatever 91-92 octane and alky will get me. Would like to runs high 9's at the strip.
 
What cam are you planning to go with? Are you using the Hypers or did you spend the money on Forged Pistons? With Hypers, expect a 7.9:1 compression ratio so a fast ramping cam is the only way to go. I used a 204/214 cam and the motor loved it! With the 72GTQ and the 3200 9/11 converter, the car pulled hard but was slightly lagged right out of the hole. It was very similar to a 49 on a stock drivetrain out of the hole. The 72 had an .82 exhaust housing on it which didnt help. I swapped it back to the 6876H and it was back to BEAST MODE! This 4.1 had stock heads on it too.


This was a 3 bolt set up.

I think if this is a production 4.1 you need to rethink your goals. 10.50 with a forged piston would be a reasonable goal if you have the $ to throw at it and can tune it. 6265/66 is plenty to reach that goal. A GTQ will be lazy and won't make more power unless you have a lot of supporting parts

You're wide open then. The turbo, cam, and boost will determine the mass flow through the engine. 90-100 lbs/min should not be a problem with a 7168 and 28-30psi.
