New Trans...1st Gear Whine?

We recently had the BRF 200R4 in our '87 T completely rebuilt by a very reputable builder.
Since installation, the trans whines loudly in first gear. It's loud enough to be heard standing along side the car as it moves. The noise is not present in any other gear, but it does return when the car downshifts back to first for slow-speed turns and manuevers.
The builder is not available for me to discuss this issue, so I may take the car to a local shop (also reputable) for a quick check.
Any thoughts on this issue? The trans behaves flawlessly otherwise, but this noise has me concerned.

Thanks,
Rick

The noise you are describing seems to be generating from the rear planetary.Do you hear it in reverse as well?

Sorry for the delayed response...

The sound does not seem to be present in reverse. But it's hard to be certain.
In first gear, it's loud and sorta like a whirring sound.

A slight amount of planetary whine in first is normal for a 200-4R. Slight. You should be able to hear it beside the car and in the car.

Was the trans builder one of are vendors or just a transmission shop that has a good reputation for the basic repairs

We've had several TH200R4's before, and this one is by far the loudest. Additionally, it was not this loud before the most recent rebuild.
This trans was built by a Buick trans specialist, so I have confidence in the build, but am still concerned about the noise. A local rebuilder listened to the car and asked if we had straight-cut gears in the forward planetary. I didn't know...Is that a common upgrade when these transmissions are built for say, 11's?

I would recommend to go back and talk to the trans builder and see what he tells you.And i hope you guys can work it out.I would hate to see him being bad mouth with out giving him the chance to make it right.Their are to many people on this forum that jump the gun to quick.

I'm not one of those people. I did not mention any names, and have no intention of bad-mouthing anybody.
;)

Ive never heard a 200 that didnt have planetary whine in 1st. Not 1. Then again my ears are trained to hear different gear noises. Even if they are barely noticeable.

Whine, check this out

watch this you tube vid. YouTube - 2004r whine

This is the whine I have in my trans, had the pump replaced and found broken pressure relief spring. 2nd time this summer, same noise take pump out found broken spring.

My trans performed perfect, shifted hard, but made ALOT of whining noise whenever the TV cable is pulled out, raising the boost pressure.

I talked to alot of people everyone told me " don't worry about it" Well I dropped the pan down and find broken pieces of a spring in there, not good. I am currenty working w/ Eric Knapp and Bruce of PTS to get this matter fixed once and for all, taking a trans out 2 times in one summer gets old....

What pump assembly did you use? One that was stock or blueprinted? If it was not stock or blueprinted your chances of success are low. Check the flywheel for runout also. The converter and flywheel need to be perpendicular to the input.

Bison- Look at my sig, it's a PTS Killer Street Trans, Bruce built both pumps that have been in the trans.

I am currently working w/ a guy he referred me to, Eric Knapp of Trannys Plus in Wisconsin, Bruce told me he would take care of this.

---This is in no way a negative post against anyone, it is just my experience of what I have dealt w/ I am not trying to point fingers or get involved w/ any kind of bashing, just so that is clear :) -----

Id look at the case and the engine facing as well as the converter and flywheel. Any runout or alignment angle on the case to engine is bad news.

bison- I understand what your saying as far as alignment goes, but I am not having problems w/ seals leaking or bearings going out, My problem is a spring breaking. I appreciate the input though.

Pump slide spring or PR spring? Do you have pics of it

PR spring, here's 2 pics.

1st spring pic is from first time, replaced w/ new pump assembly.

2nd pic is the latest find, was told when pump was removed he found many more pieces inside.

Post pics of the remaining pressure regulator parts.

I dont have the trans right now, it is 4.5 hours away from me at Eric's shop.

The pump is probably in Ohio by now.

when the first pump was replaced, part of the warantee deal was not to take the pump apart and just send it back to Bruce. I dont have any pics of that. All Eric did was swap pumps.

This isn't my thread anyways, I was just stating my experience.

RKHiPerformance, what did you ever find out w/ your trans noise????
