cam and crank sensors

Maybe this is on the site somewhere and I just missed. It ..if not maybe someone can explain the job the crank and cam sensors have. Imean I get the idea that this is how spark and fuel pulse are generated and timed. However it would be much easier to wrap my head around this if someone could explain exactly what each does..thankyou in advance
