Popular hotrodding magazine did an article on the snow system and said many people use windshield washer fluid, it said some types are made with methanol. Is this true? And are there drawbacks?

Depends on what your trying to accomplish. Depends on the specific fluid you obtain. Depends on its chemical composition.

The use of mixes 50/50, 70/30, 80/20 has been used with injection kits for decades. And if your looking at a small increase in boost levels then mix will work. Most of us greedy Buick owners want the most power... and introducing any water into the fueling.. is a bad thing.

On that note, if you want to run mix, then mix it yourself.. that way you know exactly how much methanol your getting. Beyond that.. its like filling with any kind of gasoline.. ya never know what ya get.

The article was of a paying vendor on Popular HotRodding. So the bias is up.

And... If you get the wrong WW fluid and it happens to contain amonia.. bad things will happen. I had a week ago a tuner call me having issues dialing a kit in.. 8 hours on the dyno.. problem was amonia present in the windshield washer -20 degree fluid. The fix.. They mixed 50/50.. motor made clean power..all was good. The owner got hit with the bill.. he could of bought 3 55 gallon drums of methanol and still been ahead $$$.

Sometimes somethings sound too easy, simple, etc... while results may vary.. go with whats been proven on your particular vehicle.. get that working.. then move from there. It typically will yield the best results and least amount of grief.
