Are the wider rod and main journals more desireable and stronger than the narrow journals on a crank ?

Yes,

Wide rod journals are more desireable for high output engines. Main journals are all the same.......only one width.

Even fire rod journals can be either narrow (stock size) or wide. The slightly wider bearing offers more surface area to handle the higher loads........or to put it another way it spreads the load out over a larger area.

The early Buick V6 Stage 2 racers used offcenter engines with narrow rod journals and found that rod bearing life was inadequate. They designed specific connecting rods for the Offcenter engine and later went to wider rod bearings to help solve the bearing problems.

The later generation oncenter engine blocks solved the problems by centering the cylinder bore over the rod journals.
