Which recall sticker is on your GNX's radiator support

I have a similar thread in the general tech section but not having much luck in finding the answer...GNX owners may be the best source for this answer.

In 1987 there were the two GM recalls for the non GNX turbo regals. One was for the brake switch and one was for the replacement of the aftermarket PROM chips relating to the failed emissions testing of those modified street driven cars.

One sticker is as represented in the attached pic while the other had a
letter/number code to the right of the "DO NOT REMOVE" text - something like "F 1028xx" in red text. The one with the code is pictured in Dennis Kirban's book Vol.2 tips, trivia... on page 38 (not a great picture and does not specify which recall).

From what I've been able to research, it was up to the GM mechanic whether or not to place the sticker on the radiator support (usually by the belt routing sticker or fan caution sticker). Some GM techs said that while we had the stickers, we never put them on. So...

Does anyone remember which sticker represents what recall? The GNX was only subject to the brake switch recall. So if a GNX has the recall sticker, it would be for the brake switch. If anyone has a chance, could they look to see which sticker they may have and post the answer. Thanks for the help.

Hi Anthony, The pic of the recall sticker you show is the is the only one I personaly seen and used, or rarely used. I have been with G.M. and Buick since 1980, and your right that those stickers were rarely put on.
The recalls that come to mind is, 87-C-14 prom replacements for Federal emissions only. 86-C-15 is for the powermaster pressure switch. 87-C-8 was for regals with 200-4R VIN break HP444387 to HP450102 for a manual valve linkage. Those stickers were paper, the tech would write the recall info then place a plastic film over it to protect it.

I'll have to schedule a trip when I'm in the area next month to get some pics. As a back-up plan, I should be able to get a picture of the other sticker (the one with the code on it) at Buick Performance Weekend at Raceway Park in NJ over the Labor day weekend. Hopefully by then I will have learned which sticker was for what recall and I will post the results and pics.

I have a few feelers out there with some other GNX owners. Cars are in storage so not readily available. I'll have something more to post when they can either get to the car or dig out some file pics that show the radiator support and sticker.

I was told that 87-C-13 was the brake switch campaign. Will have to cross-reference that with the 86-C-15 campaign - identical but had to be split by model year?

A. DEPRESSURIZE POWERMASTER UNIT BY TURNING IGNITION "OFF", AND APPLY AND RELEASE BRAKE PEDAL A MINIMUM OF TEN (10) TIMES USING APPROXIMATELY FIFTY (50) POUNDS OF FORCE ON PEDAL TO FULLY DEPLETE THE POWER ASSIST.

NOTICE: FAILURE TO FULLY DEPRESSURIZE POWERMASTER UNIT COULD RESULT IN BRAKE FLUID BEING SPRAYED ON SERVICE PERSONNEL AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO PAINTED SURFACES.

B. DISCONNECT 3-WIRE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIG. 1, 40) FROM PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1).

C. REMOVE OLD PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1).

D. LUBRICATE NEW O-RING (FIG. 1, 2) WITH CLEAN, FRESH BRAKE FLUID AND INSTALL ON NEW PRESSURE SWITCH.

E. INSTALL NEW PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1), TIGHTEN TO 20-27 NM (15-20 LB. FT.).

NOTICE: TORQUE VALUES SPECIFIED ARE FOR DRY, UNLUBRICATED FASTENERS.

F. RECONNECT 3-WIRE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIG. 1, 40) TO PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1). BE SURE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR IS SECURELY SEATED.

2. LOCATE COMBINATION VALVE (ON FRAME RAIL BELOW MASTER CYLINDER). IF THE CURRENT COMBINATION VALVE IS THE POTENTIALLY FAULTY CAST IRON VALVE TYPE THE VALVE MUST BE REPLACED WITH A BRASS VALVE TYPE BY FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURE BELOW. IF THE VEHICLE ALREADY HAS THE BRASS VALVE, THE COMBINATION VALVE DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. PROCEED TO STEP 3. FIGURE 2 ON THE NEXT PAGE ILLUSTRATES THE DIFFERENCES IN THE TWO VALVE TYPES.

A. REMOVE THE ELECTRICAL WARNING HARNESS CONNECTOR FROM THE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL SWITCH BY SQUEEZING THE ELIPTICAL-SHAPED PLASTIC LOCK RING AND PULLING UP. A PAIR OF PLIERS MAY AID IN REMOVING THE CONNECTOR.

B. DISCONNECT HYDRAULIC LINES AT COMBINATION VALVE. PLUG LINES TO PREVENT LOSS OF FLUID AND ENTRANCE OF DIRT.

C. REMOVE POTENTIALLY FAULTY CAST IRON COMBINATION VALVE.

D. INSTALL BRASS COMBINATION VALVE. TORQUE MOUNTING BOLTS TO 20 NM (14 LB. FT.).

E. CONNECT WARNING HARNESS SWITCH TO VALVE SWITCH TERMINAL.

F. REMOVE PLUGS AND CONNECT HYDRAULIC LINES AT COMBINATION VALVE. TORQUE LINES TO 24 NM (18 LB. FT.).

G. CONNECT ELECTRICAL WARNING HARNESS CONNECTOR TO PRESSURE CONTROL DIFFERENTIAL SWITCH.

H. BLEED ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM. DO NOT MOVE VEHICLE UNTIL A FIRM BRAKE PEDAL IS OBTAINED.

I. CHECK BRAKE LINES FOR PROPER CLEARANCES.

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT CERTAIN 1986 CHEVROLET "B" STATION WAGONS WITH POWERMASTER BRAKE SYSTEMS WERE BUILT WITH COMBINATION VALVES AND PRESSURE SWITCHES WHICH MAY BECOME FAULTY. IF LEFT UNCORRECTED THESE VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A "HARD BRAKE PEDAL" OR "INCREASED BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL". THESE CONDITIONS MAY BE CAUSED BY A CAST IRON COMBINATION VALVE ALLOWING AIR TO ENTER THE BRAKE SYSTEM OR BY A PRESSURE SWITCH LEAKING BRAKE FLUID.

TO PREVENT EITHER OF THE ABOVE CONDITIONS FROM OCCURING, VEHICLES WILL BE INSPECTED AND THOSE EQUIPPED WITH THE CAST IRON COMBINATION VALVE WILL RECEIVE A NEW BRASS COMBINATION VALVE. ALSO, PRESSURE SWITCHES WILL BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY.

1. INSPECT PRESSURE SWITCH. IF THE CURRENT PRESSURE SWITCH IS GRAY, MOVE ON TO STEP 2. IF THE CURRENT SWITCH IS BLACK, REMOVE AND REPLACE PRESSURE SWITCH ACCORDING TO THE PROCEDURE BELOW AND THEN MOVE ON TO STEP 2.

A. DEPRESSURIZE POWERMASTER UNIT BY TURNING IGNITION "OFF", AND APPLY AND RELEASE BRAKE PEDAL A MINIMUM OF TEN (10) TIMES USING APPROXIMATELY FIFTY (50) POUNDS OF FORCE ON PEDAL TO FULLY DEPLETE THE POWER ASSIST.

NOTICE: FAILURE TO FULLY DEPRESSURIZE POWERMASTER UNIT COULD RESULT IN BRAKE FLUID BEING SPRAYED ON SERVICE PERSONNEL AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO PAINTED SURFACES.

B. DISCONNECT 3-WIRE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIG. 1, 40) FROM PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1).

C. REMOVE OLD PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1).

D. LUBRICATE NEW O-RING (FIG. 1, 2) WITH CLEAN, FRESH BRAKE FLUID AND INSTALL ON NEW PRESSURE SWITCH.

E. INSTALL NEW PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1), TIGHTEN TO 20-27 NM (15-20 LB. FT.).

NOTICE: TORQUE VALUES SPECIFIED ARE FOR DRY, UNLUBRICATED FASTENERS.

F. RECONNECT 3-WIRE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIG. 1, 40) TO PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1). BE SURE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR IS SECURELY SEATED.

2. LOCATE COMBINATION VALVE (ON FRAME RAIL BELOW MASTER CYLINDER). IF THE CURRENT COMBINATION VALVE IS THE POTENTIALLY FAULTY CAST IRON VALVE TYPE THE VALVE MUST BE REPLACED WITH A BRASS VALVE TYPE BY FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURE BELOW. IF THE VEHICLE ALREADY HAS THE BRASS VALVE, THE COMBINATION VALVE DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. PROCEED TO STEP 3. FIGURE 2 ON THE NEXT PAGE ILLUSTRATES THE DIFFERENCES IN THE TWO VALVE TYPES.

A. REMOVE THE ELECTRICAL WARNING HARNESS CONNECTOR FROM THE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL SWITCH BY SQUEEZING THE ELIPTICAL-SHAPED PLASTIC LOCK RING AND PULLING UP. A PAIR OF PLIERS MAY AID IN REMOVING THE CONNECTOR.

B. DISCONNECT HYDRAULIC LINES AT COMBINATION VALVE. PLUG LINES TO PREVENT LOSS OF FLUID AND ENTRANCE OF DIRT.

C. REMOVE POTENTIALLY FAULTY CAST IRON COMBINATION VALVE.

D. INSTALL BRASS COMBINATION VALVE. TORQUE MOUNTING BOLTS TO 20 NM (14 LB. FT.).

E. CONNECT WARNING HARNESS SWITCH TO VALVE SWITCH TERMINAL.

F. REMOVE PLUGS AND CONNECT HYDRAULIC LINES AT COMBINATION VALVE. TORQUE LINES TO 24 NM (18 LB. FT.).

G. CONNECT ELECTRICAL WARNING HARNESS CONNECTOR TO PRESSURE CONTROL DIFFERENTIAL SWITCH.

H. BLEED ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM. DO NOT MOVE VEHICLE UNTIL A FIRM BRAKE PEDAL IS OBTAINED.

I. CHECK BRAKE LINES FOR PROPER CLEARANCES.

3. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

86-C-15 and 87-C-13

Looks like both 86-C-15 and 87-C-13 apply. I got the above info from G.M. S.I. I would like to see pics of the other sticker, may jog some archive file in my head.
 
from my quick glance thru some of that, i saw some Chevrolet "B" station wagons mentioned as having the powermaster setup..
is this true? i've never heard of it on anything besides 86 and 87 turbocharged Buicks.

the "problem master" brake system was used on quite a few cars years before it ever appeared on the turbo regals---------and it was used on late 85 GN's as well as 86/87's

Thanks for your earlier e-mail and follow up here. With the help from Rod and Eric Fisher, I now have the exacting details for each of the campaigns. And we now know that each campaign had a sticker. I just don't know which sticker yet. That's why I'm trying the GNX route. If a GNX has the recall sticker, we know it would be for the brake switch. Then we could conclude if the posted sticker image is the same as what's on the GNX, that sticker was for the brake switch campaign.

By process of elimination, the other almost identical sticker that has the "F 102xxxx" code must be for the emissions recall.

Thanks for posting the exacting details of the campaigns. Now we know that each campaign had a sticker. I found of a car for sale that is listed as having the brake switch recall sticker. I have contacted the seller and am waiting for a reply. I also found another car for sale that has both recall stickers. I'm waiting for the reply on the picture request.

The only picture I have of the other sticker is the not so great scanned image from Dennis' book. But you can see there is the code printed on the right side while the good pic I posted does not have the code.

Some might say I have a lot of time on my hands to be pursuing this. It's just one more thing to know. Heck, it took me a few years to get a good handle on the sequential build #'s for the '86 and '87 turbo regals.

I scanned that page from Dennis' book. I know it's not great quality but does it ring any bells?

i had all my GNX recalls done at the same time----i went to the dealer but the two cars that had less than 6 miles i did not even take to the dealer--------since i knew him so well he just entered the data and gave me the parts and the stickers for the lower mileage cars since i wouldn't let a mechanic near them and i didn't want the stickers stuck on the radiator support-------i still have the stickers in a bag with the parts and when i remember to dig them up i will scan them in a high resolution scanner so you can repo them if you want.............RC

thanks for the offer. It is probably not a bad idea to have a hi-res image in the files for future use someday.

Eric Fisher (turbofish38) confirmed that his '86 GN has the sticker I posted the image of for his brake switch recall.

Now to finalize the "F" coded sticker details. Time will tell if the code was the same for all stickers. I know there will be a good 1/2 dozen cars with this sticker racing at Englishtown's Buick Performance event this labor day weekend. Maybe that is the giveaway - all the cars I've seen with this F code sticker are racers?
