What is the reasons for........

I have read another thread about oil and what is better? Synth or dino oil.
In this thread they talk about all of these additives and stuff. I want to know why? Also is it too late to use this stuff in my engine and get the usefulness out of it?
BTW, talking about oils. Has anyone understand what Havoline has done to there oils? There oils are supposed to be better for engines that run hotter like turbo engines. The oil is formulated to break-down and it does some other things I can't remember. It comes in conv. half and half, and full synth. I want to know more.

What is amsoil? I remember along time ago, we had this riding lawn mower that had an amsoil sticker on it. I don't know if it was the amsoil or another brand, but when we drained that sucker. The oil it was thick and Grey. Does amsoil turn Grey when it gets old?
