I can't beleive what has happened to my country..They censored Old Old Rolling Stones songs. I'm 52, and I listened to these songs in my teens as they were written on the radio, and now decades later, big brother thinks I can't take it anymore. Get some backbone..

It is stupid, isn't it?

MTV is practically a soft-core porn channel yet they censor words to songs everybody has heard a million times.

Oh, but MTV is cable... as if everybody doesn't have cable

Cable?? ........... What is cable?.......... I don't have cable.

But seriously, I have no problem with the censoring of the lyrics. Yes, as adults we have all heard the songs may times over and we do know the words, but broadcast t.v. has to satisfy the requirements of the lowest common denominator of the masses. My six year old son loves football and I should not have to send him out of the room for the half-time show. As a realist, I know my son has heard these words before, but as a parent, I don't want someone who is glamorized on t.v. making my son think it is acceptable to say those words. I'm sure I'm not alone in this thinking. If it were just me, then yes, play it uncensored. But it is not just me.

As far as MTV goes, it is not what it once was. In fact in my opinion it should not be allowed to call itself MTV anymore. There is almost no music shown and if it is then it is on one of these shows where they don't play the whole video or they keep interrupting it with video bites of other things. But, MTV is a choice that is available as an alternative to broadcast t.v. and is directed at a specific demographic audience and so it can be "trashier". Which is why I don't let my son watch MTV. It's my choice.

I shouldn't have to make that choice when it comes to a national media event such as the superbowl. Is it inevitable that my son will use profanity? Yes, it probably is, but I want him to be old enough to be able to decide if it is the correct thing to say and not say it because he is six years old and the guy on t.v. said it. I believe profanity is something to say when you can't say anything else and when my children are involved I would like to censor the world. It is horrible when you can't even walk through the grocery store with out hearing someone cursing. Now before this turns into a political thread about the "right to free speech" how about my right to not have to hear it.

And in the meantime if I want to hear the lyrics to the "old" Stones favorite, I'll put on the cd, plug in my headphones, and poison my mind while my kids are watching something educational.

My basic problem with all of this is ,if the networks knew that the Rolling Stones play the music with these lyrics, why book them at all? and I doubt your six yr old was corrupted by the lyrics, the dancing was far more suggestive...To me it's like the 85MPH speedo's on our GNs..Gee,if it only says 85mph it must must be safe for all....But we all know there is more out there to experence. 85mph speedo's are just another way of goverment censorship we don't need.. Well..that was in the 80's...wait a minute, werent the Stones in the 80's too?

Like I said, I know he has heard the words but I still try to minimize his exposure to them. I know he hears it in school (not always from the older kids either) and other places where I can't influence what is going on but I have no problem with the network censoring a few words that did not change the meaning of what was being said or sung. I'm not sure how much influence the network had on choosing the halftime entertainment but the Stones were probably chosen for a number of reasons other than their lyrics.

As far as the 85 mph speedo. My brother-in-law's 87 IROC had a 145 and my firends' 88 Mustangs had a 140. I assumed that the 85 was just a GM mid-size platform deal. Was it goverment mandated and/or was it because of the tire ratings that were available? IROC's had V or Z where GN's only had H or S.

One thing I have never really understood is censorship in the U.S. I mean you're going to have to do with things at some point in your life whether it be young or old. I personally don't see any problems with broadcasting foul language on tv. If your kids don't hear it now then they'll hear it later. Besides if they learn early that it's not politcially correct to use the language, especially around their elders, then you won't have any problems. Just like showing sex on tv, who cares it's part of life. Look at many countries in Europe and Japan, I mean just because they're showing explicit content on their public television stations doesn't make the country go corrupt and everyone run around having sex and cursing at eachother. In fact I think it helps the soceity because they spend less time on censoring stupid stuff that everyone will come in contact with eventually and rather spending the time and money into more useful things.

censorship is easier in their eyes than recourse from religious groups, familys with different morals and anyone else with opposite feelings.Ed Sullivan did it yrs ago to various groups if they wanted to be on the show.Just look at what Janet Jackson caused last yr.The NFL wants the ratings, which were highest since last time steelers were in superbowl.Last yrs ordeal left a bad taste in many peoples mouths.Plus for the most part of the game was during family time viewing. Its all about ratings and making a buck.

Cesnorship is absolutely getting rediculous!

The whole thing with jacksons boob was rediculous!

I never understood the logic of sheltering your children from reality. Here, don't listen to this or watch that while I am around so I can help you, as a parent, and put things into perspective.... but since I know you are going to eventually going to see or hear it anyways - do it while sneaking behind my back or with your friends that make it out to be much more then it is.

Never understood that.

Heheh, I'm old enough to vividly remember and savor these black & white TV incidents.

On September 17, 1967 The Doors appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. The show's network censors demanded that the group change its lyrics for Light My Fire, altering the line "Girl we couldn't get much higher" to "Girl we couldn't get much better" because of what they said was a reference to drugs. Jim Morrison sang the original line instead, and on live television with no delay CBS was powerless to stop it. Ed Sullivan was so furious that he refused to shake their hands and they were never invited back.

In contrast, the Rolling Stones were instructed to change the title of their "Let's Spend the Night Together" single for the band's January 15, 1967 appearance. The band complied, with singer Mick Jagger ostentatiously rolling his eyes heavenward whenever he reached the song's one-night-only, family-friendly refrain, "Let's spend some time together."

The 85 MPH speedo deal was a federal mandate. It had nothing to do with the speed capabilty of a car. It was merely a physcholigical ploy to get people to slow down and conserve fuel along with the mandated 55MPH speed limit on the interstates. It was lifted around 1985. The 87 Olds 442 also had a 120MPH speedo with the same crappy speed rated tires as a TR so tires didn't make a difference either.

I could care less about the 'Stones and network TV. They knew they were going to be censored going into the halftime show. They did it all for the greed factor. What you hear is hype to make them appear legitimate.

I can remember buying the "Some Girls" 8-track back around 79-80 before Jesse Jackson heard the offending lyric"black girls just want to F! all night, I dont have that much jazz". From what I hear they weren't to disappointed when their label made them change it. I dont recall what they changed that part of it to as I never listened to the censored version.

It's going to get to the point that the only half time show that won't be censored is Lawrence Welk. A bunch of dead old people doing the polka. Wait a minute I think that was the Rolling Stones, make a dead man cum. ;)

Turns out ABC ran the censorship thing by the Stones and they signed off on it.

The irony of the whole deal is that unless you already knew what the lyrics were, you probably couldn't understand them from the broadcast anyway.

exactly, I wouldn't of even known the difference and it's all the young kids that they are so concerned about "protecting."

The key would be to find a good balance but you can't make everyone happy. and at this point the FCC is just waiting to hand anyone a law suit so you can't offend anyone, or else.

It would never work if we were to just due away with censorship completely because kids are so effected by what they see on TV and hear on the radio. I think th reason no kids are doing good in math and science nowadays is because of how the "nerdy" kids are portrayed on TV.
