Stock Head Unit Capability

I have been trying to design my system around the stock head unit as I have a number of G bodies. I have had some decent success using the audio control LC6i to feed my amps but it always seems to be lacking some depth and clarity. A few of my audio buff friends say garbage in gets you garbage out! Is there any hope for our stock head units? If not please provide suggestions! I want to be able to give my dad the car and not have to provide a tutorial on how to work the radio thats why I like the neat simple stock head units.
