Remote radar detector

Has anyone installed a remote radar detector in their car? For some strange reason I always find myself speeding when I drive my GN, I just dont understand...... :D

I'm thinking about a Whistler 3300 remote radar detector, it mounts somewhere in the front of the car and the little control box can be mounted somewhere in the car. since I"m in VA they are more useful since the state and local cops don't tend to use the instant on as radar detectors are illegal.
Of course, I only intend to use it out of state :D

I'd like to place the antenna behind the grill and the control box somewhere in the dash so its actually part of the dash.

Has anyone done this or will I be breaking new ground?

Thanx

I have a remote radar detector in my wifes yukon.I got a ticket "passing" through VA. a couple of years ago---the fines ended up being mighty expensive--don't think they can't detect it-oh---they can

I use a V-1 remote, but I don't really hide it from the cops, so much as hide it from people behind me who tailgate to see it.

BTW, if you expect to evade the "detector detector", you'd best make sure you have a high-end unit like the Valentine to be sure they can't pick it up. Like Geoff pointed out, many don't work as advertised.

One request...

Don't depend on the VG-2 function of radar detectors alone. Use your head. I have a Whistler with the Text display and use it pretty often in Md and Dc. In Va, I don't use it often but the few times I have used it, I found out that the radar "guns" that they use, have incredibly low power until you get right up on them!!! The only ones you can detect at any distance are the moving radar cars. The troopers use some radar that basically puts you about 50-100 feet out by the time you get the signal (TOO LATE).

If you get the remote detector, still use your head. If you get any signal on a highway, SLOW DOWN. If you get a signal and you didn't slow down enough and the guy pulls out after you, TURN OFF THE RADAR and hide it!!

I have to agree with mkazigian. If you're going to get a high end unit...get a high end unit. The Valentine is one that is known to work, and work well. It also has incredible range.

Another one that has great range in the K-40. I have personally owned this unit in a couple of vehicles, and can speak highly of it's ability to function. The K-40 CAN be remotely located, with lights in the dash, and tiny speakers in your air vents. It too is undetectable.

Both are great units, with large price tags, that get the job done.

hmmm i think yall need some radar detector education. The valentine one is verrrrry over rated and verry out dated. It was good 4 years ago but not now. You can get the same or better performance from a 150$ bel 890 detector as you can the 400$+ valentine one here is some good reference material for yall.
www.radartest.com They have both high end and economy priced models rated. I have the bel 890 and wouldn't trade it for anything else. A good site to buy radar detectors www.discountcell.com they were the cheapest place i could find bel detectors and as long as you get a vector and not a express you can't go wrong. Oh and for the remote radar detectors i think those are too expensive and don't work. look at www.radartest.com and you will know why i say this.

Fortunately the SS3000 model from K-40 is not the one I was referring to. The 3000 model tested horribly. Unfortunately, I don't recall what model number mine was, I can only say that it used two HP red lights in the dash for front and rear. And two tiny speakers that went behind my air vents. My volume and on/off was controlled by a black knob located under my dash.

I truly enjoyed that detector and wish I had it in my GN. I currently have 2 Whistler 1585's, 2 Passport 5000's, and 2 Solo's. It's not that I own that many vehicles...I end up miss placing a radar detector and run out to buy a new one. Only to find the one I lost a month or two later. You would have thought I would have learned by now....

The bottom line...
It's your money. 87gnstock is correct, do your homework. Ask some of the other law breakers in your state which one they have had the best luck with. :D

Escort & Bel have some good detectors for less money, but Radartest.com (Craig Peterson) is merely a shill for Escort/Bel....an entity created to market their products. Think about it- there's no money in being a self-proclaimed "radar detector expert" unless it's in consultant fees  or in cross-promotion of products.

Look for an unbiased source that takes advertising from ALL the manufacturers, doesn't "invite the manufacturer" to show up with a ringer, and has their own engineers doing standardized testing. For example, Car & Driver. Also beware of subjective superlatives and "sound bite" quotes.

They all have free-trial periods, so you can even try for yourself. We did.

At one time Va had a whopping one VG-2 detector detector and it was being used down south of Richmond. By now they may have more but I've only picked up VG-2 with my Whistler radar detector about 5 times in the last 2 years and I suspect those were false alarms. This being up in Northern Va.
Ghall, where you get snagged with the VG-2 at?

I also always use my radar detector in VA where ever I go though If I am following a cop or am stuck in heavy traffic and see a cop car I'll turn it off. My radar detector resides on my sun visor (in my mustang) :) with the display taped over so its not visible from the rear. The power cord is hardwired in the car and run up along the trim with a toggle switch below the dash. This makes it easy to turn it off without being obvious.

My experience in Va has been that I pick up more county police running radar than state police. Maybe I've been lucky, I've not had the misfotune of being tagged with instant on in VA as I suspect they don't use it often as radar detectors are illegal. :D Usually they turn it on and wait and my detector has given enough warning to alter my speed.

I do agree that you get what you pay for, cheap detectors aren't as good in most cases. Jammers, don't waste your money unless you have designed a transmitter to jam all freqs radar guns use, then look out for the FCC

Rock Mountain is the way I went. Pricey, but it scrambles the return signal to the cops.
