morel lifter preload

Went through all this after I blew #4 cylinder into the valley. Had the heads cut (too much so it seems now) and put it back together. Same 8.050" rods that came in my FTSS roller kit I got when I freshened the motor. Car made 7 in/hg of vacuum and wouldnt stop for anything (vac brakes). Idled like crap and ran like crap. Made one shakedown pass, a 11.54@119 and parked it. Had my buddy look it over. Ordered the checker and called the Doc. Wound up having to order a Comp 7.950 rod from my local speed shop. Put them in and it went 11.15@120 first pass the next trip to the track.

With the easy availability of push rods now (in the old days, I had to go through the catalog and ended up running
pushrods for a 429 FORD! ) there is no reason not to have correct pushrod length and proper preload. Even if you stick with the stock rockers, you can still get close if you will use the checking tool, add your preload, and order accordingly...
