I was about to buy the M2005 helmet and the guy at the speed shop it is a motorcycle helmet and said i need sa2005, i called Rt. 66 racetrack and spoke to the tech guy and he said its ok. But now im wondering if he thought i have a motorcycle. Is this helmet good for a car running in the 11's

If you are running 11.23, you will also need a roll bar at many tracks. Most require a roll bar if you run quicker than 11.50.

snell M2005 is fine for your et/speeds as well as a single layer firejacket and driveshaft loop , but below 11.50 youll also need and a roll bar
below 10.00 it needs to be a full face helmet with visor

yeah i know about the roll bar issue, i just need a helmet for a race next weekend. im now running a little slower that 11.50. i just need to resolve this helmet issue.

According to the NHRA rule book, the end date is predetermined

From the 2007 NHRA rulebook:

10:7 HELMETS
As outlined under Class Requirements, drivers in all classes must
wear a helmet meeting Snell or SFI Specifications. Snell K98 is
acceptable in place of any Snell M-rated helmet.
SFI Spec 31.1A = Snell SA, open-face helmet
SFI Spec 31.2A = Snell SA, full-face helmet
SFI Spec 41.1A = Snell M, open-face helmet
SFI Spec 41.2A = Snell M, full-face helmet
Drivers of all cars running 13.99 or quicker must use a helmet
meeting Snell K98, 2000, 2005 or SFI Spec 31.1A, 31.2A,
31.1/2005, 41.1A, 41.2A, or 41.1/2005.
Drivers of cars running 7.49 or quicker must use a helmet meeting
Snell SA2000, SA2005 or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, or 31.1/2005 Specs.
See Class Requirements.NHRA Helmet Expiration Dates

Snell K98 1/1/2009
Snell 2000 1/1/2012

NHRA used to require SA rated helmets and would not accept M rated helmets even for cars in the 11's so the guy at the speed shop may not know that NHRA changed their rules a few years back and now accept the M rated helmets down to 7.50. As Mattias said, the difference is in fire resistance. It's been too long since I read the IHRA rules so I don't know if they accept the M rating or not. The real bottom line is whatever the tech guy says at the track you are at, so if you are headed to Rt 66 you are all set info-wise.

Thanks i bought the m2005 helmet and my tech guy asked who makes the helmet , i said RCI he said ok your all set. But i did call rt66 again to verify m helmets are ok and the tech guy said yes down to 10.00
