Heat Shield

I have my 3in dp, uppipe, and turbo getting ceramic coated. I am trying to decrease heat in the engine compartment. I have a turbo blanket, but have used it only a few times. It was rubbing my NOS hoodliner and wore some spots in it! I was thinking about just removing the heat shield by the air box. Its a real pain to deal with around the dp, and if I run it again I will need to find a better way to secure it. I think it may be tapping and hitting the downpipe while driving. Has anyone removed this? What does it really protect? Heat from entering the inside of the car from the firewall? Any thoughts?
