EGT, Exhaust Heat Shield and Bracket - oh my

What a pain in the a$$ to mount the clamp on style EGT 90 degrees out from the stock 02 sensor. Drilling the hole wasn't so bad, but no matter what way I position the clamp style sensor, either the heat shield is in the way or the bracket support. I remember seeing one picture of an EGT install with the pipe OUT of the car with the heat shield notched and now I see why...To give the band clamp worm gear room. I also seem to remember a few that removed the heat shield all together?

Suggestions without having to rip the car apart? Any way to notch the heat shield on the pipe (it's riveted) while in the car? Maybe a sawzall would get it, dunno. Or, should I just remove the dang shield altogether? The water hose runs near it so I'd be a bit leary, but is it really needed? If removing the shield, I could drill out the one rivet, but how do you get to the interior rivet on the O2 side? Oh, the back breaking fun!
