To answer your question about repairing your alternator in case you ever have to go down this road again, there are some very good YouTube videos I used to repair and upgrade a few alternators. Anytime I repair one or disassemble for powder coating, I change the regulator out to the HD version and it has been fine. I used to get parts (regulators, hardware, insulators, etc) from some place out of Florida.... Think it was called Spring Hill or something like that. Not sure if that was what you were looking for, but I have found them pretty easy to replace.
There are two versions of the CS144 alternator (early & late), the video will show you the difference.
