1987 pro-touring grand national, from the ground up

Ill try when I get time, I don't think the mod on the sc&c has been started yet. The fenders were just hung, and front end, gnx vents cut and the brackets for the gto seats are being made.

Ok, this is an update/tutorial I guess for people that want to try this. There is a material called Di-noc, its a carbon fiber styled vinyl made by 3M. It has a very unique texture and looks very cool. Google di-noc and look at the pictures, Ferrari's, Porsche's, Austin Martin's and even Bently's have this stuff on the cars, its that high quality. Its also not cheap, the roll I got for 48x48 was almost 100 dollars shipped, and in the world of vinyl that is very high. But either way I decided to use it to update some things on the car and thought I would share it with you.

First off, this stuff is amazing. Its very sticky, but easily pulls of if you make a mistake. Also, its very rigid but a second of heat from a normal hair dryer makes it soft and pliable like cloth.

I used an xacto knife, a dull screwdriver, a credit card and a hair dryer to do this, not exactly state of the art equipment

I cleaned everything very well with dish soap and water, then scuffed it up with a scuff pad I had for dishes. Then I rewashed it again and cleaned it with a degreaser to remove every possible thing to promote adhesion

So, I started by cutting out a sheet about the same size as the panel and applying it and tucking it in to the outside corners

It really stretches and I heated it up and forced it into the corners, when it cooled it looked great, I then started trimming

I also decided to do my gauges, I was already switching from the crapy 120mph gauge here to a 160 gauge with no miles on it

These are the final pictures, I personally love the way it looks. It might not be for everybody but the combo of this, painting everything black and going to black leather will be great.

If you don't tunnel them,or maybe use L.E.D. lights in them, Glares from The Clear Cover make your gauges hard to read. It's minor thing,You'll notice it when driving. just a heads Up....They Look Cool!!

I did swing by the shop today and checked out the progress. Scott Atk is wiring away and things are coming together, hopefully the front end will be on besides trim and hood today.

The seats are mounted in there, easiest thing in the world, couple small brackets, insanely easy. They were so easy they said they would consider making a run of them if there was a large enough demand. They look great. FYI in the pictures they are as far forward and as high up as possible, they actually go way lower and quite a ways back for me. Hopefully we will have the back seats fitted today or monday.

And a little preview of the interior. This is with SEM products, it came out factory looking. This will be the color of all the grey plastic in the car if its not covered in either vinyl or leather.

I also removed the side trim on the car, horrible little things. Surface rust under there and maybe 1 spot where it went through. First actual sign of rust on the entire car, those things must hold water like a sponge. There was someone asking for the factory strips but I lost your email, needless to say they got ruined in removing them, sorry

Please tell me your not leaving those seat red. That might be the first thing about the car I don't like. I mean its your car so do what you want but they just look out of place being red like that.

Wow, I cant believe how bad it was under those trim pieces!! I originally thought body n paint could wait a year or so but i guess not!

You forgot the NWS in the title. This thing might get mistaken for porn at somebodys work! Looks amazing congrats.

hello; Dsapper, with the seats your talking about getting braces fabbed up for sale correct? And if it is what seats would that able me to use? Why I ask is my drivers seat has a twist and or bend in so I kinda lean to the right. I am interested.

i would also be interested in a set..I know there was a lot of interest over at mcss.com but the guy never really took off on making the brackets

nice build so far btw

I posted earlier that I will be recovering those along with the rest of the cloth in the car after mockup. Just using the covers on them for now so we dont damage finished products

Bring the car to Sema, I fly in early Tuesday morning. :)

Peter

Won't be running by then but your more than welcome to swing by and see it, I'll be at SEMA too on Wednesday. Ill grab a few pictures for you guys

I was specifically talking about brackets to make gto seats mount in a g-body. Its so simple its almost criminal to make some for sale. The front right I think bolts in to the factory hole, then there are 3 tabs the size of matchboxes in 1/8" steel welded to the bottom of the frame with holes in them lining them up. The factory uses 4 bolts on stamped sheet metal. Welded 1/8 plate should be stout enough haha. If you went the bolt in route you would have to make a full bracket and the seat would need to be raised an inch or so.
