Hydroboost conversion using Astro Van HB unit.

In digging online.... I see quite a few of the truck master cylinders have the 1-1/8" bore... and the 1/2" x 20 and 9/16" x 18 threads on the lines...

There are some car ones too that work... but the tanks are angled alot like the master cylinder is tilted alot more than the ones in the HB converted regals... I think the truck ones will work better. They are almost level...only slightly tilted.... similar to a HB converted regal....

The '85 Chevy truck... 3/4 ton.... 2wd.... 454 engine.... shows a TS101873 part number (1-1/8" bore with the proper line thread sizes) at Napa... or Advanced Auto Parts...Advanced has them (remanned) for $24.99 + $5 core..... seems cheap enough....

I'll try and get one this evening and see if I can make this work...

Here are the pics off the Napa website:

Well... the two different master cylinders I checked... are no shorter than the one I already have..... looking like I might tweak the location of the PS reservoir at this point.

I am really thinking I might re-do how mine attaches to the brake pedal..... I just don't like that cut/weld rod part of this conversion....I am thinking adjustable threaded rod end..... or relocated pin on the brake pedal (would require a small tab to be welded to the brake pedal... to move pin back 1-1/4" or so.....)

Not much progress in the past couple days....

Got my last pressure hose from Napa yesterday afternoon. I should have enough to hook it up... will do the return later.... before I try and crank the car obviously...

Maybe tonight I'll get close to dropping the engine in.....

Hey Blazer, so what did you end up doing for the pressure line from the pump to the HB? I was just curious. Napa still has my HB and original line. I might just pick it up from them today. I did pick up an 85 HB to gear line yesterday, did you make that one worked. I wish I could tell but with out having my HB it is hard to tell. I am just staring at a big empty spot on the firewall :(

Nothing yet... should try the HB to gearbox line this evening... but the other will have to wait until the motor is back in.....hopefully be running within the next week..... maybe.....

I ran into the same problem with my conversion where the MC hit the ps res lid. I just elongated the bolt holes on the res bracket where it mounts to the fender and was able to get some wiggle room. Not really noticeable unless you are hovering right over it. Just a thought.

Did you get your lines made? I hope this hb to gear line works, because that would make it easy. I am just hoping NAPA comes through for me on the pump to hb line. J

I bought a kit from powerbrakebob with the braided steel lines, but I spent about 10x what Blazer's budget is. :frown:

Your setup is the right way to go IMO. I wish I would have been more patient and pieced together a kit myself - I'd probably have enough left over for RJC FMIC I've been wanting.

new pics

Worked on it for about an hour last night...... got the PS reservoir moved toward the radiator a couple inches.... looks great.... bolted up the lines.... I haven't unhooked anuthing from the PS pump yet.... but the HB to gearbox line looks like it will work fine... The other line... HB to pump.... looks like I might follow Lee Thompson's lead.... and cut the hard line coming off the pump... and the end off the stock 85 hose... and marry the two with a compression union...

Take a look at the pics...

Any picks of the HB with the cut & welded brake push rod.

ask and ye shall receive....

The rod isn't pretty, but I ground the welds down to make it decently smooth....and knock the flux off....

I really wish I would have threaded both pieces and put a sleeve on it.....or maybe a hiem joint..... but alas... it is on there.....

Hey, thanks for the pics. Looks good.

I've been staring at/tripping over my Astrovan HB system in the garage trying to figure what to do with the pushrod. I was also thinking about cutting & sleeving it but didn't know if there was enough material to thread.

Did you "T" the other hose yet? When you're done, take pics. I might get me off my A$$ and do something about my brakes!!

No... I haven't tee'd the return line yet.

I was mainly trying to get the meat of the conversion behind me.... at least the part that I would be easier while the engine was out.

I look to put my engine back in this week. Should have it running in the next couple weeks...

I'll take more pics when I get a little progress...

Your going to love them blazer!!! I drove mine yesterday after bleeding the brakes in!!! OMG what a difference. The pedal is very firm, almost tochy with the skinnies on in the front. Hands down best bang for you buck mod. I was still just fooling around with them. The car will hold 20lbs and not even move! I still have only 150 bucks in everything, lines fluid, m/c and booster. IMO when campaired to the vacuum conversion why bother?

Awesome!

I worked on my engine last night to almost midnight.....getting it ready to drop in....

You got any pics?

How did you do your conversion? ..... HB base plate? the rod? .... the lines?

Again... pics?

Great job.

I hope to get mine running in the next week or so.... engine may go in tonight....

....snip......The car will hold 20lbs and not even move! .......

Be careful!

TinMan who has also done the HB conversion.... found out his brakes would hold more than the tranny would... LOL.....he broke his 2004R sitting in is driveway.....

I am pumped about this conversion....
