Remote trunk release turns on the fans...

When the car is off, and the key is not in the ignition: Press the remote truck release and the fans come on briefly. They only come on once, meaning that if I press the remote trunk release again the fans won't come on a second time.

When the car is off, and the key is not in the ignition: I can use my Viper remote alarm to open the trunk and it does NOT turn on the fans.

When the car is running, the remote trunk release works fine.

I also noticed that if the car is off, the key is not in the ignition, and I press one of the window switches 'up' it will briefly turn the fans on as well. The electric locks also seem to be acting up, they lock immediately, but I have to hold them in the unlock position for a few seconds for them to unlock the doors.

Check your battery voltage when this occurs, and if you are still using the factory fan delay relay get rid of it.

Yes, but this problem was around previous to this.

The car was in storage for about 4 years, the Viper's brain(?) died. It was taken in and replaced. When I picked the car up from where it was being stored and got it home again...I found that the remote trunk release was not connected (behind the glove box). When I hooked up the plugs to the switch, I discovered this gremlin. Also, now the hood 'flashes' on the Viper's two way remote as if though it's not recognizing that.

Unplug the fan delay relay (both connectors) and try it again. I'd bet the problem is within the delay relay module. When the module starts giving you problems, it sometimes is relative to a slight battery voltage drop - or in your case, EMI within the system. Moving the electric seat or opening the electric door locks could also cause that type of electrical noise.

WHO unhooked the trunk button and why? It looks like someone wired into the trunk release wiring for the after market alarm??

When the viper alarm was installed they spliced into the wiring for the remote trunk release. It was working fine like that for a couple of years.

No, just the fan delay relay. It's the biggest one, with two connectors. Take both connectors off - then leave them unplugged. Here is an image:

Alright, I disconnected them and tried it...nothing, it didn't open the trunk and it didn't kick on the fans either. I can still pop the trunk with the remote alarm though.

Also, I have your SPAL fan wiring harness installed now with my SPALs...but this problem existed prior to that.

Does the trunk release button in the glove box still work when the key is in the ON position?

IGN needs to be in RUN or ON normally to make it work, assuming non-hacked stock wiring.

Power for it comes from the 25A A/C fuse on the brown wire.

You can easily test for power at the switch in and out with a simple voltmeter or bulb with two wires on it.

Black wire out of the switch gets power +12, with Key ON when you press the button.

Okay, apparently while working on it last night I forgot to hook the power wire back up to the switch. Which is odd to me because even with that disconnected the remote trunk release on the alarm was still working.

So, now...both wires are hooked up to the back of the remote trunk release switch. There is a purple wire spliced into one of them (presumably for the viper alarm?).

I had all the fan delay relays hooked up normally.

I pressed the switch, and the fans came on briefly.

I disconnected the fan delay relay (the large one with the two connectors) and when I press the switch, it did not bring on the fans (nor did it open the trunk with the key OFF). But it did open the trunk when I turned the key ON.

Now, I'm pretty sure the remote trunk release should work without a key in the ignition...it has for years in mine anyways as I've always preferred to use that than the actual key.

Okay, so I put in a new fan delay relay (I have a few NIB) and tested it. Same thing, with the key OFF I press the button and the fans come on briefly. And it only does that once, meaning that it will only come on the first time you press the trunk release...the fans won't come on repeatedly if yo keep pressing the button. Then if I turn the key ON, and try it, the trunk opes. Turn the key OFF and press the button again and the fans come on briefly as as they have been.

A ground somewhere? Maybe when they installed the Viper?

I would say it's gotta be the added wiring for the Viper trunk control.

The trunk release is only supposed to work with the key in the ON position with the factory wiring.

Sounds like what they added causes a spike into the fan delay relay triggering it, once. Not the only thing that can make the fans run when they shouldn't through that relay.

Remove that thing as it causes more headaches by far than help.

Then see if the viper will still open the trunk like you want it too.

Ah, okay...so just cap off the plugs and tuck them away?

EDIT: And yeah, I saw the maintenance manual and it says that the key has to be ON for the remote trunk release to work...I could have sworn that I use to use it without doing that, but it has been in storage for 4 years so maybe I am mistaken.

But there is still "something" wrong somewhere as it shouldn't be doing that in the first place even if the fan delay relay is installed which tells me a ground is bad, or there is a short or "something" somewhere.
