How did you hold it back to install chain?

Hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the lower gear is @4 degrees retarded. Is that what you wanted?

Is that flaky rust and scale behind and around the camshaft area? The threaded hole under the watet port looks full.

If so, you have much more to worry about than tentioner stack order.

Looks like the engine sat with no front cover on for a winter or two outside.

You can dislike that post all you want Frank. Those flakes of rust are PLENTY big enough to ruin your day when they come loose. Keep in mind your turbo and your oil cooler will get it along with the rod bearings, main bearings, crank, lifters, and timing cover.

It's time to drop the oil pan, tape stuff off and start policing that scale.

Must have been a stray thumb on the TB phone ap.

All things aside, you need to make a game plan to get all that stuff taped off and cleaned off. These engines run waaaaaaay to tight of a bearing clearance to have jagged rust flakes going through it. (not to mention ruining a turbo, oil cooler, and timing cover too)

The way i did it above stretched the spring to where it lost tension. I took a long screw driver at least 14'' and placed behind turbo to hold new tensioner back . Install chain first hope this helps someone.
