Hello Everyone....just Read A Post About The Gnx Exhaust. I Have A 1987 Grand National In Which I Replaced The Original Exhaust System About 7 Years Ago Due To Leaks, Condensation, Etc...i Wanted To Keep The Original Look As Much As Possible And Decided To Order A New Hurst Olds Exhaust System That At The Time Maybe In The Late 90's Early 2000 I Managed To Be One Of The Very Few Owners Of This Exhaust Systm Due To Them Being Discontinued. Is The Hurst Olds Exhaust System The Same As The Gnx. The 2 Mufflers Both Have Dent Likes On Either Sides With The Little Pin Hole At The Back Of The Muffler. I Remember The Guy At Gm Told Me That I Was Very Lucky To Be Getting My Hands On This Exhaust. I Went Back To The Dealership To Order Another System As A Spare But Were Later Discontinued. Is There A Part Number To Verify If The Gnx's Used A Hurst Olds Exhaust System. It Sound Wonderful On The Buick And Love It Very Much

Thank You And Cheers

Michael

Michael,

The Part numbers for the original GNX Exhaust were: 25513005 & 25513006. This included the tail pipes as well as the resonator...yes, they are not mufflers they were called resonators.

Thank you for replying....very helpful info. So is the Hurst olds / 442 exhaust system the same as the GNX? Where can i get my hands on the 442 system?

I am going to check my exhaust for part numbers tonight. I do recall there are part numbers on them. THEY DO LOOK LIKE THE GNX EXHAUST SYSTEM.

Uncertain if the GNX exhaust is the same but it was sourced from early 80s Regals and G-bodys

Here is a picture of a GNX exhaust system for you to compare:

Bingo!!!!! It Looks Like The Hurst Olds....442 Exhaust. I Am Going To Check Tonight Under My Gn To See What The Numbers Are. I Am Going Then Take A Photo Of It And Do A Small Video Clip Of The Gn Starting Up With This System.

Where Can I Get The Same System To Keep As A Spare? They Are Discontinued From Gm Though I Purchased This System A Long Time Ago. The Gm Parts Specialist Stated That I Was One Of The Few That Was Able To Get My Hands On This System.....

Thanks Herb

Michael

And those are the same part numbers used on the dual exhaust of the 82 Regal Sport Coupe and 83 Regal T-Type.

To say those are the same as the 442 would be incorrect. Technically those wouldn't be numbers matching which is what I think some of you guys are trying to acheive. Monte Carlo SS also used Dual Exhaust. Both the 442 and MCSS had the tail pipes exiting in the wrong location. Don't forget there are also date codes stamped into those resonators if that matters.

22526204 And 22526205 Are The Part Numbers On My Resonators / Mufflers. It Was Very Difficult To Go Under The Car But I Managed To See The Numbers. It Also Has The Gm Stamp On Them. Can Anyone Tell Me What Year Is This Exhaust System From? I Think It Is For The 84 Old 442 / Hurst Olds. I Will Try To Upload A Photo Along With A Small Video Clip Of The Sound Of The Exhaust System.

Here are a few pictures that I was able to take. A video will be uploaded shortly!

just because the mufflers are the same, doesn't mean that it is the same exhaust system as a GNX- i'm pretty sure the GNX got different pipes due to the torque arm and panhard bar on the rear suspension.

Perhaps Eric can confirm by looking in some of his parts books but I have heard that the resonators included the tail pipes.

you are correct------the gnx exhaust system actually passes where the upper control arms are in the normal suspension system-------any system that uses the normal suspension system (upper and lower pair of control arms) cannot ever be fitted with a "correct" gnx exhaust system...........RC

Thought about using 442 resonators, but ultimately passed on the idea.

Many years ago I got my hands on a pair of resonators for a 442 with the intent to replace the stock GNX resonators. They were delivered with tailpipes as part of the weldment.
The resonators were the correct style, and had the creased ends. However the tailpipes were not the same routing as the stock GNX tailpipes.

Instead of cutting off the tailpipes and having new ones bent, I decided to buy a new GNX system from ATR. But I could see if one was determined to have the correct style resonator, they can modify a set of 442 resonators. It would require cutting off the tailpipes and creating their own.

I always heard that the GNX and the 1987 Olds 442 had the same exhaust system however I just received an old dealership G Body Oldsmobile Parts & Illustration Catalog and the 442 muffler tailpipes are indeed different part numbers. Muffler w/tailpipe RH is 22526204. Muffler w/tailpipe L/H is 22526205.

I have always heard that the mufflers were from the Olds 442, with a corner cut off and welded closed to clear the rear suspension. and where basically crushed in there ... interesting ...what are the part numbers on your gnx mufflers im curious

just saw the other thread with part numbers and found another thread saying The mufflers were from an 82-3 Regal. The part numbers were 25513005/6. GM called it a resonator.

This is a resonator, with pipe-right hand, for Buick automobiles. It fits for Buick Lesabre wagon, Estate wagon, Regal, Lesabre, Riviera, and Skylark for the U.S.. It's a genuine General Motors part with an OEM part number 25513006. Please keep in mind that this resonator is discontinued for the U.S. market since February 1, 1993.

Interestingly, in the old 1988 GNX Parts Service Bulletin I see the GNX exhaust part numbers are actually called out as 12332900 for the R/H Muffler and tailpipe assembly and 12332903 for the L/R Muffler and tailpipe assembly. (The crossover pipe shows as 12332904). So perhaps the numbers on the actual mufflers (resonators) of 25513005 and 25513006 were just stamping numbers, or perhaps actual muffler part numbers before being welded to the tailpipes where they then became known as the above assembly numbers.

interesting
i believe the cat is bolted to the down pipe with a flange on gnx... correct ?.. not clamped like gn's ...
