Looking at used turbo

Feel the impeller, should be very little side to side movement and almost no endplay

Not sure what stock size is. TA 49 is what most people goto.

OK, it's a Garrett turbo with a 52mm compressor wheel. Can't determine a part # from the A/R (area to radius) ratio and foundry casting marks on either the compressor cover or turbine housing.

reading about compressor and turbine A/R can be done here:

Buick turbos specs_Precision.jpgThis spec data from Precision has it maybe being a TA-52.

The TA-52 would need a higher rpm stall converter than stock. Also, for any turbo you are looking at, you'd want a turbine housing A/R of .63 and not the .82 housings. The 82's are fine for top end rpm at the track, not so great on the street.

For a stock or nearly stock powertrain, the stock turbo will handle up to 20 to 22 psi boost. Upgrading to a TA-49 over stock does not make much difference. Only feel a difference once boost is greater than that 20 to 22 psi level. maybe get 20 HP more with TA-49 on the street at 16-18 psi boost with a TT chip.

Search feature on the site is working again - maybe do some reading. On a stock powertrain, an upgraded turbo by itself won't do much. In some cases, it can hurt. Cost wise, a rebuilt stock unit is the way to go if you will keep the boost level below 20 and controlled by the chip, whether TT or the factory chip.
