I'm in the process of redoing my buick putting all my 87 parts back on my 82 body. Im in the process of stripping the header pannel for paint, do i have to strip the entire thing to bare fiberglass or just smooth

Just smooth will work. I took mine down till I started seeing white showing through.

Bare! Take a (straight)paint stick and sand top.flat in "x" 's to block and straighten the fiberglass, all headers are wavy but if you block it in a x fashion, it will be arrow straight. I used 150 paper and worked down to 220, put 3 coats of fill type primer on,let bake in sun for a day,re-blocked it with 220 paper,finished up with 400 grit,applied 2 more coats of fill primer , final sand 400-500 for base-coat.....
