Electricians question

I’m restoring an1950s Philco refrigerator and someone installed a newer plug on the wires. When I unplugged it from the wall the wires pulled out of the plug. Both blades are the same size so does it matter which wire goes when I install a new plug. Thanks

no it doesn't matter especially on something made before the 60's

On a two wire plug it doesn't matter, however typically the brass colored screw is for the hot wire (black wire), the silver colored screw is for the neutral wire (white wire) and the green screw is the ground wire (green wire) on a 3- wire plug.

For safety reasons I would highly recommend getting a new 14 ga. 3-wire "appliance cord" with Black, White and Green wires.

14 ga. wire is for 15 amp circuits while 12 ga. wire is for 20 amp circuits. I doubt they had 20 amp circuits in the 50's.

The molded plug end of the "appliance cord" would provide a factory looking end while attaching the green (ground) wire to the refrigerator frame/ case would provide protection against electrocution if the frame/ case became energized by a bare wire some how.

"Appliance cords" come in different lengths so you can get one the length you need and are probably not much more than a name brand quality plug.

I also have an old '50's era PHILCO refrigerator which still works fine...I'm only missing one drawer inside of it and have absolutely no idea where I could find one (that is if finding one is possible).
Does yours look like this?

This is a single door fridge. It’s a customers fridge that I’m re painting. Thanks for the help on the plug. Here is one I have for sale that I did earlier this year. I’ll get you a pic of the Philco I’m doing now. This cubs one is a GE

Here is the Philco. The color is a Honda 2017 called championship white. It’s a creamy white as we wanted to keep it looking antique. Still need to paint the fridge but this humid weather is putting a damper on things

A little dirty but you have to love those quiet low speed compressors, well, until you get your electric bill.

Nice paint jobs on those for sure.

Actually from what I’ve read on these is they are pretty decent on power especially with a new seal and they are compact. Thanks for the compliment it turned out great

Tell the owner if all the lights dim for a second on startup it's normal.

Because you won't hear it running.

The Philco is done and turned out beautifully. Customer picks it up next week. Cooled done to 37 degrees no problem.

Speaking of efficiency, an old boss was selling and old window A/C unit. A co-worker asked if it was very efficient, my old boss said "yes, it's very efficient, it uses ALL the electricity that goes in to it. It doesn't waste any." Lol
