Driveshaft shopping

So I am in the market for a driveshaft. I am going chromoly shaft with chromoly trans and pinion yokes. Just not sure if I should get a 3in or 3.5 in shaft and who to buy from. I have checked with PST, Dynotech, Dennys and Strange. Dennys is the most expensive on both sizes. Looks like Strange is the cheapest on a 3in and PST and Dynotech on a 3.5. Anybody have a input on who they used and any real advantage on 3.5 over 3in?

I run a PST alum shaft with 1350 on both ends. They were easy to deal with. Of course they were a little over an hour away, so that made it more of an easy decision. I'd use them again no doubt.

does PST offer the driveshaft for a turbo buick or did you have to give them measurements?

They may have the measurements for a stock replacement on hand. I don't know. Since I am replacing the pinion yoke I will need to install it first then take measurement for them to build the new shaft.

Denny's all the way !! You should call them and talk about how they balance their driveshafts . Yes they are more expensive , but worth the quality .

steel 3.5 and you never have to worry, buy once and if you get a 7 sec itch it will still be good

We use PST for all the shafts.. Race, street, streetrods.
On the race stuff we use the MW diff yoke.
Have bought some dozen shafts. Right price, fast delivery, nice people.

Plan is to run mid to high tens. I would rather purchase one shaft once that is overkill than have to replace it again at some point.

Chrome moly is stronger than mild steel. Mild steel is very strong. Aluminum is the weakest material. Strength is only 1 of 2 important features in a driveshaft. It is imperative that you know the critical speed of the driveshaft and any competent driveshaft builder will help you determine this. Critical speed is the speed at which the driveshaft starts to act like a jump rope. You want to stay well below this point. The critical speed of a driveshaft goes up as you increase the diameter of the shaft and decrease the length of the shaft. A 3" diameter mild steel shaft with a 3.42 gear and a 28" tall tire,at the length needed for a turbo Regal,is 152 MPH and is plenty strong. If you want to go faster than that,get a 3.5" mild steel shaft. The chrome moly trans yoke is probable over kill but the cost is only slightly higher so I would get one. The chrome moly pinion yoke is definitely over kill and is prohibitively more expensive. The Spicer cast pinion yoke is plenty strong. The problem with Denny's is the wait time and cost. Here is a company that can give you everything you want.

I just bought a 3.5" Alum Denny's with a forged trans yoke and 1350 u-joints. Very nice piece, quality work, not the cheapest but worth it IMO.

Spoke to a person at the qa1 booth at the SEMA show. I asked him if they could withstand being driven everyday on the streets and from rock chips, he showed me one that they used for off road racing and the only damage I could see that was significant was on the aluminum ends. Price he said would be around a thousand for a Grand National drive shaft.

So I ended up purchasing a driveshaft from Strange Engineering. They had a Black Friday sale and got 10% off plus free shipping. It was a deal I couldn't pass up. Ended up being considerably cheaper than anybody else I priced out. It's full chromoly with 1350 joints and forged slip yoke. Looks very nice.
