These clients are in danger of wandering away and not being able to find their way back home. Project Lifesaver’s motto is "Bringing Loved Ones Home“. The police put a small transmitter on a client. It's about the size of a watch. Each one has it's own frequency. If the client wanders away, the Police respond with the tracking equipment and locate the client. As of June 2008, there have been over 1600 lives saved and credited to Project Lifesaver. The average locating time is 22 minutes. Currently the program is used in 43 states and all the Tidewater locations. The program was established in April of 1999 as an initiative of the 43rd Virginia Search and Rescue Company of the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office. We currently have 28 clients in James City Co. The City of Williamsburg has 3 clients.
The Police department goes to each client monthly to change out the batteries in the transmitters. The battery and band costs $10-$12. A new transmitter costs approximately $300. James City Police currently has 2 tracking systems, the City of Williamsburg has 2 and the Sheriff's Dept. has 1. Tracking systems cost between $2700-$3000. As long as there are funds available, the program will always be free to the public. PLUS we will collect canned foods for The Salvation Army food bank. We will try to make it fun as we “STUFF THE CRUISER“ full of cans.
