It is common - when the motor gear shreds itself OR the cable mechanism ball screw type gear shreds itself...or etc etc.

Unfortunately, - there is no way to properly diagnosis this without dropping your headliner to take a look see.

Once you drop the headliner - you can easily remove the motor with 2 screws and then you will most likely know what's what.
You'll be able to see the motor gear - as well as look into the little 1/2" hole and see the ball screw type ends on the cables.

I always thought it would have been nice to have had a provision for a manual key and plug access that could be used in the case of motor failure.
Notice in the one pic - there is a plug and I have no idea what it is for - as it is not my car.
That was what got me wondering - what if...

If you stop pressing the switch the noise will go away...:D

Do you have the wrench to manually open the glass?

Bryan

Open her up and see if there is anything stuck in the track

So - ya think the reason they did this to this CF5 GN car my ..ahem..."buddy" is trying to pawn off on me is because they couldn't fix the moonroof?
The question I am going to answer is whether or not the moonroof assy will slide back in or if they hacked.

Where and how does the manual operator / wrench go - I do not have such a magical provision in my headliner.

Thanks for the pics.. They make things easier... Hopefully I can get the headliner out without damaging it...

It's the stupid front headliner trim piece that I worry about.
There is a trick to it - and I haven't ever figured it out yet.
Push to front, slide, wiggle, - blah.

Take a pic of the headliner, there should be a clip that pulls out, this is where the wrench goes

Bryan

My roof is aftermarket, the hole is behind the roof, has a squeeze clip in the hole

A clip?
You mean a plug like in that one picture?
No joy on mine,
Must be one of dem der aftermarket jobs.
What is is - an allen wrench?
I gotta go look at a spare motor - inquiring minds want to know now.

Velly interesting.
I've noticed some of the sun shade / screens are different as well.
Some have the recessed pulls - other the chrome pulls.

I will give it a try in a minute and reply back with results

If it is the factory original - paper thing / paper thin / paper board- my heart goes out to you.
Especially at the visor corners. :(

But not to worry - if it breaks into 13 pieces - "only" $225 from Brian - not to be confused with Bryan,
