Hey crowd. Hope everyone Christmas was good and Santa was nice and generous.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a 9" rear. Just don't want to take a chance with C clips or deal with leaky C clip eliminators.

So my options are:

1) Moser - well known and pricey

2) QuickTime Performance http://www.quickperformance.com/ - chepest and pretty well known.

3) Strange Engineering https://www.strangeengineering.net/

4) Trick Chasis https://trickchassis.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=11&zenid=4362e70608oaa07cv04nr7b7k5

5) EBay seller from NC who builds them (he built a rear for a good friend of mine and it's trouble free) - https://www.ebay.com/itm/CHEVY-S-10...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649 (I know this listing is for a wrong car, but he builds them for G bodies too)

So? What do you guys think? Any personal experiences?

I would tell you to look into the 8.5 with ford ends if you haven't already..

Moser.. buy once.. and forget it

Chris Alston's Chassisworks Fab 9 with weld on rear end back braces and Strange S/T Series 40 spline axles with 5/8" studs.

I did the axle, C-clip, and brake upgrade myself all at once and it was less than $550.00

Axels and elemators from Moser.

Unless you are putting down serious power a 9 inch is not needed the aftermarket has all the parts for the 8.5 rear.

I went with a Quick Performance 9" fabricated housing , aluminum center section , Wave Trac posi , new 3.40 ratio & 35 spline axles with ford drum brakes . $3300
The aluminum center ,Wave Trac & 3.40 ratio added quite a bit too the cost and you could probably knock off almost $1000 without those up grades .

Right on w/ the $1000.. Mine has the nodular hsg, Grizzly locker, billet yoke, 3.50 gear, 35 spline, and 11x2.25 drum brakes. They gave me a new main hsg, rather than a jy piece. I also got the fill bung, drain, jack pad on it. $2300 to the shop.
In the "FWIW" dept:
I do some "preliminary prep", to the 9's I use. Like a vee sicks, they WILL leak, at some point in it's life. :(
1. I use the flat side of a cutoff wheel, and knock the burrs off of the backside of the stud holes. BE SURE the studs are pulled in completely.
2. Chamfer the ft side of those holes, along w/ both sides of the carrier hsg. A fairly significant chamfer is used, so the Sealant will form an "o'ring" type seal, at as many places as possible.
While doing the "cleanup", look in all the corners, back sides of the tube welds, and the folded channel at the rear face, to be SURE there's no dingle berries hanging around. I shoot brake clean thruout, wash w/ hot water and purple stuff. An engine cleaning brush works well, on the tubes.
Quick suggests no gasket. I use the Permatex sealant for oil/grease, as the seal.
Only issue I had w/ mine, was the angle that the lower shock studs had, vs the shock bushing bore. I "corrected" the angle, so the shock bushings were not in a bind. This involved making an angled piece of channel, w/ a self locking nut tigged to it.:shifty:

Looking good.and well worth the upgrade!

Moser 9" with a Wave Trac, 40 spline axles, 5/8 studs, and a back brace. Was expensive, but totally worth it. Would never waste the money trying to make the 8.5 work. All's you're gonna have is an expensive piece a shit 8.5.....

Chuck , I had the same issue with mine and fixed it with a spacer that was machined on the correct angle to have 2 flat surfaces for the shock & bolt . Got to love my GM Tool Makers , just show'em what you need and you have it before you go home .

Sam, I called them, and got a smartass answer. It went something like this: Ya, we've heard this before. Just tighten the bolt, and the bushing will deflect and it's OK. I asked the guy if he was hitting the bong, and said the shocks don't have rubber bushings. Side loading a poly will also side load the shaft.
He replied that it would require changing the design, and cutting new parts. Conversation ended at that point. I welded a angled spacer on, w/ a tig welded self locking nut behind it, and called it a day......

I'll be going with a Quick Performance unit in the next couple months. I'll be looking for four digit power and with all their options it will more than hold up to that. Quote I got was great too.

Sold my 8.5”, so now is time to order.

Not sure about these options:

Billet steel housing w/oil seal surface

New housing center piece

1/4” heavy walled axle tubes

Center section upgrade

What does it do for me and should I get it?

Thanks again guys.

I wouldn't use 31 spline axles if your going with that rearend

Yes 35, why change to a 9 of your only going to run 31s. You can do 31s on the 8.5
